Minister offers words of wisdom during Nationwide prayer before the race at Daytona

Last year I heard a man of the cloth tell me that NASCAR does not care at all about what is right or wrong, morals or ethics, all they care about is MONEY.

I was basically stunned that he said this, not that it is not true, but for a man of faith to say this to me was incredible.

This person is very close to NASCAR and knows it inside and out.

Yesterday I heard Dr. Tim McNeil from the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach say " As we seek to build a new prosperity, May it be built on Gratitude instead of greed"

Big words and oh so true.

NASCAR sit up and take notice, the fans have said it, and now men of the cloth are saying it as well.

TSN drops NASCAR races in Canada

The emails, blogs, forum postings and even a new Facebook group has all popped up in the last 24 hours due to TSN dropping the coverage of NASCAR.

Fans across the country are extremely upset with the actions of TSN.

Especially after riding a wave of success from last weeks race in Montreal, its no wonder why Canadian Fans are upset with TSN.

The writer was also effected with this, luckily enough my wife realized we had it on Bell Expressvu on channel 440.

This is part of the premium package that you need to buy extra.

I will be contacting TSN for an official responce tommorow, right now there phones are jammed and I am lost in voice mail jungle.

No wonder I have already been contacted by a bunch of people upset with TSN over this.

Richard Petty Speaks-It's All About The Fans

Richard Petty without a doubt is the most respected voice of NASCAR, when THE KING SPEAKS people listen.

If they dont listen they are stupid.

Blunt, but here I am as a NASCAR fan, president and founder of this website, a RV'er, an entrepreneur, and I am wondering why NASCAR and the racetracks themselves dont listen when the KING SPEAKS.

Here is a run down and how I think NASCAR has basically dug a hole for themselves, and is now trying to dig themselves out of it.

NASCAR has learned a lot about marketing, and many can learn from them.

But, after awhile the hype starts to look and sound questionable, especially if you cant back up the claims that you make.

This I can speak from experience and knowledge as I own a marketing and advertising company.

The hype has reached an all time high, but then again it gets more and more each race lately so I reserve that statement for a later date.

But, when does the fan say, " how stupid do you think I am"?

The anger has risen each year as NASCAR and many attached to it, simply keeps putting prices up, and as many state take more away each and every year.

Things came to a boiling point this year with the Daytona 500 and the false advertising they did, and the clubhouse at Lake Lloyd being taken away from them.

This started a flurry of media activity, and cost them alot, especially after the unethical way they handled the entire affair.

From a personal level, it cost them about $ 100,000.00 in lost revenue for next years race as my entire group will not be going back.

It also cost them a documentary being planned, " The road to Daytona-The first 50 years."

We where ready to go and then my phone rang , friends in Daytona told me the bad news about what Daytona did.

One associate had his bus being driven down by his driver, my driver was ready to go, all the supporting cast was ready, and then the bombshell dropped.

So, the first thing that NASCAR needs to do is clean up its own shop and return to a ethical and moral running of all its operations, and in that I mean the tracks, vendors, and of course themselves.

I shut down when I get faced with immoral actions, its the business that I am in, I cant and wont associate with others that are no on the up and up.

The coverage and sponsorship dollars lost because of what happened at Daytona will be felt for a long time, many people will never return.

What action has Daytona taken so far?-nothing.

Now, lets fast forward to today.

Richard Petty's first race in the Cup series was in Canada.

Canadians are the number 2 fan base in NASCAR.

As a matter of fact, I will tell you a secret that I have never done before and that is the viewership statistics of this website.

United Sates is first, Canada is second, and Mexico?, down in 6th place.

The States takes 80% viewership of this site, Canada is at 15%.

So, lets look at this relationship shall we?

First off, I would hazard a guess that I am the biggest Canadian NASCAR fan.

This through what I have done with this website, and in turn the relationship I have with NASCAR and all its operations attached to it.

As a philanthropist, I have given a lot financially to organizations in and around NASCAR, one needs to look no further than my relationship with MRO, and recently our group raised the most funds for the NASCAR Foundations annual Track Walk at Texas.

This is advertised on our front page.

Not bad for a Canadian huh?

Now, if you want to talk money, I wont tell you the exact funds spent, but on a ticket buying base alone, this comes to over $ 100K annually.

I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

So, lets look at our fan base and see how we are treating them shall we?

Dont forget what The KING said, " Its all about the fans"

This weekend we are racing in Chicago as you know, and think about how close it is in relation to Canada here.....

Chicago wont ship tickets to Canada......

Last year they said "you can pick them up at will call, we dont ship to Canada"

What a way to treat 15% of Nascars Fan base, no wonder I cancelled my account and in fact never even went to the race as I felt like I was being treated like scum.

Going to will call with a 45 foot bus towing a car is no easy thing, and totally unnacceptable.

Lets now look at how NASCAR and everyone else treats Canadians.

Time and time again, I cant even order merchandise on-line from the NASCAR store and all its affiliates. Now lets not even talk about the tracks or second or 3rd level marketing organizations.

The NASCAR members group?, it was not even open to Canadians!

As a marketing person, this is totally embarrasing, NASCAR is speaking out of both sides of its mouth at times it seems.

Erika my daughter and I went to see Tony Stewart the other day at Home Depot where he was signing autographs.

Erika the worlds most knowledgeable 8 year old girl on all things NASCAR wanted to tell him that he was " a Bad Boy"

I wanted to drop off a Flag and some fridge magnets for him to have.

The lineups though in the 100 degree heat where a quarter mile long, so the two of us went shopping instead.

But here is a picture of the crowd that showed up, well done Hamilton Nascar Fans!!

The Mighty Cummins ISX

I took a new rig out for a test drive today, something I have been waiting for years to do and that was to test drive the new Cummins ISX engine.
Wow I dont know where to begin.
For me its all about the engine, tires and transmission, I could care less about the interior stuff.
Heck I dont even remember the colours inside.
The coach was a brand new 2007 model still on the lot a 45 foot Holiday Rambler Navigator 4 slide model.
This coach came with the new Cummins ISX engine. This engine is like a 426 Hemi, man the power!
Its a nice feeling knowing that you are driving a coach with the worlds biggest engine in it.
The amount of power from a standing stop is awesome, and going up a grade did not even make it miss a beat, its like nothing was there.
The Chedoke Expressway I usually labour up at 50 mph today I did 65 and hardly had the pedal down at all.
What really impressed me was the engine braking system, Cummins decided to make their own this time around, no pac or jake brake, they made up an entirely new one, they call it an " Intebrake or Integrated Brake System., operated if I remember right on two overhead cams.
The system has a low and high position. Low shuts down 3 cylinders high shuts down all 6.
This system is so powerful, they should add a middle position and change it to 2 4 and 6 cylinders.
Coming up to a stop light I decided to turn it on where I usually do, and was forced forwards in my seat by the amount of braking torque this engine has.
It was awesome to say the least.
A few miles later I came upon a stop sign where I usually turn left to head to Niagara Falls, its in rural Ontario a sleepy corner in Ontario, a town called Bismark.
No big German battleship here, just a school, a restaurant a few scattered houses, and a crossroads. Some may remember the old go-cart track, we used to stop here as teenagers on the way to Welland to watch the flat track racers.
I turned the brake on where I usually do with my coach, and was slowed almost to a crawl a good thousand feet before the stop sign!!!This coach is awesome I am thinking!!!
When I started to head down our mountain I could hardly wait to try it out and again, I was pleasently surprised, the brake was so powerful I had to turn it off half way down the hill.
So, the bottom line is this, after driving over 200 rigs of all types, driving the new Detroit series 60 515 HP, The cummins ISM, and now the ISX, if you have an option make sure you get the ISX.
The braking confidence this gives you alone is well worth it.

Infield Camping at Talladega

I am watching the race and am very surprised by the amount of empty spots on the infield at Talladega. Granted according to the ticket office they are sold out, but was there a huge amount of tickets on ebay not sold, or did a lot of people get sick and stay at home?

Chime in if you know anything here folks but this is a weird one to figure out.

Holiday Rambler Navigator

I was out at Sicard RV for the open house this weekend and came upon a brand spanking new 2007 Holiday Rambler Navigator 45 foot painted in the Copper Canyon paint scheme, and it is one nice looking rig I can tell you that!

This coach has 4 slides and also has the BIG Cummins ISX in her. This is the biggest engine Cummins has ever put in a coach and she is rated at 525 HP.

The Jellico mountains in Tennessee on I-75 can eat my diesel fumes with this baby, she will use all her power and pull you up with no effort with this massive beast!

I hope in the next day or so to take her out for a spin, so if you are in the market for a Holiday Rambler Navigator, this might be the one for you, I will let you know how she did!

Michael Mcdowell Crash at Texas Motor Speedway

If you have not seen the crash yet, it was one of the hardest I have ever seen, thank god Michael was okay.

The car is obviously safer, that is not what I want to write about, what I want to address is what the media has not or wont talk about.

Has anyone else noticed that they are deliberately not talking much at all about the track cleanup?

Has anyone else also noticed that we seem to be having an abundance of oil lines leaking this year?

Is there anything we can do from a drivers viewpoint to help out?

Here is what I am proposing we study and talk about.

1. I have long believed that we can and should do a better job at cleaning up after a wreck and especially a fluid leak.

2. We need to re-look at how these cars are constructed in relation to the oil system.

3. We need to educate drivers and their spotters on what they can do when they have had a engine failure.

So here is a rundown of the problems and potential solutions.

1. When we have a fluid leak out go the crews and they spread out the speedy dry, let it sit and sometimes get the jet dryers out and blow it off.

This is where we need to change our thinking.

First off, the last thing we should be concerning our self about is how long the delay will be or the race might not get done on time. My answer to that is start the race 1 hour earlier, this will give us plenty of time to clean up after a fluid spill. After all what is more important than saving a human life.

What we need to study closer is how we apply the speedy dry and how we clean it up.

First off the safety crews need to slow down and the track officials need to stop pressuring them to work faster. They need to be given the time they need to properly do their job, period.

Second, we need to look at how the clean up is done. I have long wondered why the speedy dry is not always removed after a spill, this needs to be addressed, and also how the speedy dry is removed. It makes no sense to not remove the speedy dry, we need to take the time and remove it.

When the speedy dry is removed, we need to be assured that it is all off especially in positions on the track where traction is important.

Is the sweeper good enough alone?

Should the jet driers be used all the time?

It really is a question of physics, a powder left on the track will offer less traction on the surface, just think of it as a light dusting of snow or rain, just a slight amount can lessening the traction available.

Speaking of physics, lets also talk about a better way of getting the speedy dry off after it has absorbed the spilt material.

After the sweepers and sweeper/vacuum machines have done their part, and then the jet driers blow any residual away, we need to examine the surface and see if there is still a surface barrier of speedy dry left over.

My guess is that there is.

This is where we need to study possibly washing the track with a good ole street washing machine. This will liquify the remaining powder left over, and then the driers can finish the job off and voila a very clean and track that offers traction.

2 The Oil System

Has anyone else noticed lately the amount of oil lines that are coming off of engines? Can we not secure these things guys? Seems to me there are either some pretty lazy mechanics( suggested by tv announcers) or we need to design some better oil lines and containment system. Maybe we need to go back to a conventional oil system with a deeper sump pump? or, maybe we need to redesign the entire engine package with the oil pump at the rear of the engine, this would save all the damage to the pump and lines when they smack into something.

3. Education

This is the easiest thing we can fix, how many times do you see drivers after they knew they blew up just drive down the middle of the track like nothing happened. The spotters need to check for traffic and get the drivers down to the apron a.s.a.p This will dramatically change everything, the cleanup, the danger and the time the race will be delayed. This needs to be acted on right away.

Congratulations Toyota on your first Nascar Nextel Cup Win

Wow, what a race, and has anyone else noticed how Kyle Busch seems to be playing with other drivers out there?

Toyota enjoy the champagne tonight and take a bow for a job well done.

Joe Gibbs racing can also take a bow, you sure have done a lot with the new team and car and not to mention new manufacturer with Toyota.

As far as Rowdy, why is it he seems to just be able to drive away from people lately?

The truck race the other night was another example, it seemed like everyone else had a couple cylinders out, he was passing people at times like they where standing still.

I picked Busch in my pool today, good choice.

Come over to our website and join in with other fellow Nascar Campers, the fires hot drinks cold and company is great!

More on Tony Stewarts lashing of Goodyear

In a seperate interview I just heard Tony Stewart says he is going home and taking off all his Goodyear tires on his cars and vehicles and installing Firestones instead.

He even suggested that if this is the best that Goodyear can do that they should get out of racing and go back to building car tires only.

He then retracted that idea and said maybe that is not a good idea either.

Several other drivers also piped in and said it was the worst tire ever they have driven on.

Although their where not a lot of accidents today contributed to the tires, there where spin outs, wall rubs and a lot of looooooooooose cars out there.

On this one I commend Tony Stewart for speaking out, as an Rv'er, tires are the biggest complaint motorhome owners have with their rigs, if only we had some good tires on our million dollar rigs we would stop blowing tires, and more lives would be saved.

Is anyone listening out there?

http://www.nascarcamping.com

Tony Stewart Calls Goodyear Tires Pieces of Crap

Never know to mince his words, Tony Stewart lashed out today at Goodyear which he and a lot of other drivers have been doing throughout the week and called the tires that Goodyear brought this week " crap"

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, a Goodyear executive was on the air before the race defending his companies position strangely enough.

Recently I have been very hard on the RV manufacturers because of their wrong choice of tires, so it is also nice to see drivers hard on the tire guys also.

Why?

Simple, the tires are the biggest safety item on our vehicles thats why.

Patrick Carpentier Qualifies at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Congratulations to my fellow Countryman Patrick Carpentier for qualifying in Atlanta on what he calls " Crazy Friday's"

Glad to see he made the big show!!!

Now Patrick just remember, the goal is to finish, Atlanta is just like last week at Vegas, a fast track, and lots of spread out racing, so there is lots of time to pass other cars, take it easy make sure you got lots of room, and remember the tires are not the best so expect some " loooooooose" conditions.

I am going to have some extra Maple Syrup tommorow at breakfast.

More Tire Issues for Motorhomes

It nevers ceases to amaze me at times in how stupid the thinking is at the highest levels in the RV industry.

Tonight I spent a few hours going over what can be done to solve some of the problems that the RV industry itself cant or wont do.

You have to wonder at times how pathetic the industry is operating at when customers themselves have to look at what can be done because of the ignorance of the people that own the companies themselves.

Tonight we tried to solve the weight problems and what can be done about the lack of proper tires on my buds Holiday Rambler Navigator.

If you remember he had a catastrophic tire failure 2 weeks ago.

I have been thinking a lot about this lately, the solution is so bloody obvious, it makes you wonder how incompetent the powers to be are about their own products that they make.

Lets look at tires hall we?

Ask yourself this question.

When is the last time you or anyone you know had a castrophic tire failure in a car?

For myself in 28 years of driving cars and motorcycles, I have never had one, and I estimate between 12 motorcycles, and 20 cars, and what a million miles, I have NEVER had a tire failure.

A few flats yes, but never a tire failure.

But why then in the RV industry do I know so many people that have suffered tire failures?

Easy answer is oh your tires where underinflated, blah, blah blah....

But, the answer that I have to that would be, but so many cars have underinflated tires, why dont they have failures as well?

Well, the answer is simple, the motorhomes are grossly overweight for the tires that manufacturers put on them.

As I write this I just found out that that another friend had a tire blow out on his trailer heading home last week.

The story goes on and on, and the victims and death toll keeps climbing.

Tonight we seem to have come to a conclusion that we can fix what the manufacturers dont want to fix, or at least spend a few thousand dollars trying.

I have researched for a couple years now a new tire that has been made, its a 315 tire, and the long and short of it is that this tire should fit on my buds Navigator.

I will post more as this saga continues.....

We have received over 25,000 hits today all wondering about the blue puzzle pieces the announcers are wearing today during the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

This is to raise awareness for Autism Speaks.

At the end of the race Michael Waltrips special edition gold wheels that he raced on his car will be signed by the drivers and then auctioned off to raise money for the foundation.

More details can be found on their website, maybe I will get me one of those wheels:)

Jacques Villeneuve to withdraw from Nascar

Corporate Canada listen up. Are you going to let Jacques return home without a fight?

Outside of the United States Canada is the biggest watcher on TV and participant in Nascar.

Through this website alone Canadians account for 20% of all traffic, and the United States 79%.

That leaves 1% for the rest of the world to fight over.

So, why is it the Canadian Advertisers have not flocked to Villeneuve?

Well, 1st off there has not been a lot of press about him, but bigger to me is Jacques lack of grasping what he needed to do to get the acceptance of sponsors and the fans.

As soon as I heard Jacques was thinking of going to Nascar I knew this was going to turn into a problem.

Why?

I never thought Jacques had the proper attitude or "persona" if you will for the fans and sponsors to grab onto.

Anyone in Politics in a big way know when you need to " handle" your candidate and "shape" him so the public will like him better, and with Villeneuve I never saw that happen.

In the last week my fears where confirmed more, with what I saw and learned.

I hope I am proved wrong, but there is a lesson to be learned here for all aspiring Nascar drivers, this isnt like any other form of motorsports you need to be schooled in " Nascar "
and know how to make it in this motorsport league.

Corporate Canada open those pocketbooks will ya?

As a Canadian it hurts to write this, maybe there is a calling for a new business here for me to explore?

Patrick Carpentier?

You can sleep tonight you got the package.

Canadians Fail to qualify for the 50th running of the Daytona 500

Oh Canada was replaced by Oh No when both Patrick Carpentier and Jacques Villeneuve failed to qualify for the Daytona 500.

The countries hopes where dashed when Villeneuve crashed, and Carpentier was yet another victim of the mysterious right front tire blow out that has been a problem this year at Daytona.

Carpentier drives for Gillette Evernham, hmmmmm wasn't it just a year ago that Casey Kahne blew out 2 or was it 3 right fronts in the same race? Better check those camber settings boys....

Undersized Tires and Overweight Coaches

That sums up what is happening more and more in the RV industry lately.

Today my buddies front drivers tire on his Holiday Rambler Navigator blew to shreds.

His driver was taking his coach down to Daytona for the race.

All tires where up to spec specified air pressure, checked daily, blah, blah blah.

Now, this coach in particular has become an overweight Hippo lately, I remember only 7 years ago this coach had over 10,000 lbs CCC. The same coach today is less than half of that.

I put the blame squarely on Monaco Coach Corporation, they have lied repeatedly on making the product updates they they have promised to this coach and here lies the exact reason why they should have put bigger tires on this beast of an RV.

Firts off, I hate anyone that is a liar and Monaco/Holiday Rambler are liars plain and simple.

Tough words you say?

Not really when you understand that the head guy for product improvement made the promise and failed to deliver on them.

Why oh why do RV manufacturers think that we as Rv'ers are stupid is beyond me. With the power of the Internet today you can no longer hide behind slick salesmen and the lies that the factory tells them to say.

I have always said " people lie, numbers dont.."

When a coach comes in with a very low CCC, what do you do to fix it?

Well the easiest way is to put bigger tires, axles and bags on it, thats how you do it.

What you dont do is blow the tire up to its maximum tire pressure, this gives a tank like ride to the coach.

So, Monaco/Holiday Rambler and others listen up, start to put some bigger tires on your coaches will ya?

Monaco already lost out on 3 potential sales because of this, my buds went elsewhere.

Afterall, how hard is it to put a 315 tire on the coach?

Is the safety of your customers not worth it?

The biggest mistakes the RV industry is making

It had to happen.....

Stupidity would finally get ahold of the RV industry.

But wait you say, its not here already?

The latest goof by the industry is the placement of 250 lbs fridges onto the slide outs. Load it up with a further 200 lbs of food, place it at the front of the slide and there you have a 450 lb bubba on your already overloaded front axle.

Not that this was bad enough, but having an almost 500 lb extra weight on your slide does nothing to make the coach stabler when in station and set up for overnighting.

The side to side swaying action is exagerated 20 times over having this much weight hanging way out there.

Oh, when its cold out, cross those fingers and toes and pray that that super heavy weight slide comes back in.

Wake up engineers, get rid of this stupid idea.

BREAKING NEWS FROM LAKE LLOYD CAMPERS AT DAYTONA

This is a story that if I did not verify I would never believe it to be true.

I verified this with the front office of Daytona itself just now.

I also verified it with the Clubhouse staff also.

The clubhouse for the Lake Lloyd premium members is no more.

This was called the " Board Walk Club ", and apparently is now being called " The Camping World Community Center"

The clubhouse had 2 pool tables, 4 tv's a kitchen, outdoor tables and a bar.

Now, without notice, and still advertised as a community center for its members, the clubhouse has been converted to a retail store for Camping World.

This apparently for a 5 year term.

Never was this mentioned to the campers that have spots here, and people are pulling in as I write this fit to be tied.

Still being charged $ 3,000.00 for a spot, the community center over the years has been extensively used by its members, to host several successful parties, meet and greets, Valentines Day Socials for the ladies, the fighter pilots from 325 Fighter Wing from Tyndale have been our guests there, Fishing derbies held, Pool Tournaments, Games purchased, Internet cables purchased and donated, all by its members.

Ironically you can see posts below of the activities held in the clubhouse throughout the years.

This I can personally say is the ultimate low I have seen and feel at this moment that Nascar and Daytona has done.

People feel betrayed that Daytona advertised and still advertise this as a Community Center for use by its members, and they get here and find out they have been lied to.

Shame.

The Magic of Barrett-Jackson

It was truly touching over the last few days to watch the emotion and amount of money raised at Barrett Jackson through the donations of huge amounts of money raised during the auctions.

Garry Bennett also needs to be congratulated for his " locks for life" donation, of his 15 year growth of his ponytail.

I hope that this is just the beginning for Barrett-Jackson, it would be nice to see the donations keep on climbing.

The Intimidator Series 3

At the Barret Jackson auction tonight the RCR Dale Earnhardt Intimidator was presented, this car with the serial number being "3" is a one off and also came with an extra engine.

One of Dales cars race cars preceded the car being auctioned onto the stage, which was a nice touch. Richard has 43 of Dales Cars in his museum back in North Carolina.

The car auctioned off was a 1969 Chevy Camaro Coupe, with a 427 producing 600 HP, RCR series 3, Block # 140 . The car has the engine that Dale Earnhardt used in the Daytona 500 in 2000. This engine was in the RCR museum, but RCR took it out of retirement and put it into this very special car. The engine was detuned some with a different carburetor and intake manifold to allow it to be run on the street. I am not sure of what the hp is of the engine in the car, I think what Barrett Jackson reported was that of the second engine.

The second engine even had the Intimidator series 3 logo on the valve covers. The engine is a brand new 427 crate engine. Most likely if someone whom wanted to drive this car would drop this engine into the car and save the other one. I could see an electric choke on it, so you know it could be used on the street.

Whomever bought this car no doubt might also want to think about saving the second engine as well, this alone might at some point turn into a very valuable investment for somebody.

This car also will be the only one called " The Intimidator" said Richard Childress

Only 50 cars in total will be built.

The package sold for $ 575,000.00

Several tickets where also thrown in.

1979 Oshkosh Motorhome on Barrett Jackson

Did you notice that Oshkosh Motorhome for sale on Barrett-Jackson!

Man that sure was a beast huh?

I thought more of about how I could use it, it might be great to bust some low lying trees in those campgrounds not maintained by owners huh?

When I saw the winning bidder of the unit, I am sure that I know him, if anyone has any idea who that guy is, he sure looks like a guy I met at the Niagara Falls KOA in Canada a few years back, he was driving a brand new Ferrari red 40 foot rig, it had a Mercedes-Benz 400 diesel in it, I think it was on a freightliner chassis, it sure drew a lot of stares and picture snappers!

I think it went for about 50 grand, it was one of those rigs that you see on the Paris-Dakar rally, and man that seemed like a steal for sure.

It might not have driven the best, but it sure would have been a head turner:)

Barrett-Jackson

Strange Auction going on the last few days.

Just now a Ford Torino Talladega 1 of 748 made went for 40 grand.

Wow what a steal.

The announcers also said the same, I thought this car would have gotten 75k or somewhere around there.

This auction seems to have some really good bargains, and fewer people this year, it will be interesting to see if the numbers are down or not.

The real test for me to gauge this auction is when some Hemi 4 speed matching numbers cars go over the stage, then we will know what is going on.

A Historical Look at Daytona International Speedway

The Daytona 500

The Track:
Daytona Beach International Speedway
Daytona Beach, Florida
Type: Tri-oval
Size: 2.5 miles
Banking in corners: 31 degrees
Built: 1958, 1959
First Cup race: 1959
Seating Capacity: 168,000
Owned by: International Speedway Corporation

In the world of auto racing, there are facilities that need no introduction. Le Mans. Indy. Monaco.
The Daytona International Speedway is a member of this elite group. Since 1959, this Florida venue has provided some of the best racing in the world in a variety of motorsport classes, but Daytona is the icon for NASCAR stock car racing.
The Daytona 500 is the season-opener for the annual Sprint Cup tour and in many fans’ minds is the premier event on the 36-race circuit.
Scheduled for February 17, this year’s Daytona 500 will be the 50th running of what is known as “The Great American Race.” The 200-lap event will also be the first Daytona where NASCAR’s “Car of Tomorrow” will be raced as this new chapter in NASCAR car design is ushered in.
Over the past 50 years, Daytona’s reputation and presence continues to reach new benchmarks. It carries the largest purse of any NASCAR Cup race, it is unique in the world of sports as this race is the start of the season, and the season’s most important, and the race has produced the highest US television ratings of any auto racing event since 1995.

History/Background

There were few paved ovals on the NASCAR Grand National (now the Sprint Cup) circuit after NASCAR organized in 1949 and during its first decade. But while the Daytona races were held on a temporary beach/road course during the 1950s, NASCAR founder Bill France was thinking ahead. In 1954 plans and permits were already underway for a paved, D-shaped “tri-oval” configuration of 2.5 miles in length. Late in 1957 the earthmovers took to the ground, and in order to build up the track surface for the 31 degree banking in the corners, scooped out the ground in the middle of the oval. This man-made area soon filled in with water, and the 29-acre lake became known as Lake Lloyd.
There were some funding issues with the building of the facility late in 1958, but France and his group were able to get the necessary backing, and on February 22, 1959, the first Daytona 500 was held in front of 41,000 fans who witnessed speeds never before obtained in NASCAR racing.
Taking the starting green flag for the inaugural race were 59 cars, all vying for top prize in the “500-Mile International Sweepstakes” which offered a total purse of $67, 760. The famous finish in this first race had Johnny Beauchamp winning the 200-lapper, but Lee Petty believed he had won. Track officials spent the better part of the next three days going over photos of the finish, and it was decided Petty and his Oldsmobile had just inched out Beauchamp, thereby winning the first 500 and just over $19,000.
By contrast, the 2007 Daytona 500 winner, Kevin Harvick, won $1,510, 469.
In the 1960s, famous drivers such as Junior Johnson, Fireball Roberts, and Tiny Lund all took home the Harley Earl Trophy by winning the Daytona 500, but in 1966 Richard Petty won his first 500, and the “King” went on to win five more, the most Daytona 500 victories on record.

Some exciting 500 finishes

Over its 50-year history, the Daytona 500 has produced some of the most exciting finishes in auto racing history, starting with the 1959 race.
Richard Petty had won the 1971, 1973, and 1974 races, and was determined to take his Dodge to victory lane in 1976. But with one lap left, David Pearson passed Petty. Coming out of turn four, Petty ducked low inside and passed Pearson, but the two tangled and ended up on the infield with the finish line in sight. Both cars were severely damaged. Petty could not car his car refired, but Pearson was able to gather himself and his car back together, winning his only 500.
The 1979 Daytona 500 finish could be the most memorable, as it was the first live televised broadcast of the race, and viewers watched in disbelief as last-lap leaders Donnie Allison and Cale Yarbrough tangled and crashed on turn three. A heated word exchange between the two soon led to a physical encounter, and Donnie’s brother Bobby saw what was happening, and got into the exchange while television cameras captured all this off-track action as Richard Petty drove on to his sixth 500 win.
After 20 years of trying, NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt finally won the 1998 Daytona 500 after leading so many of the races to break one of the biggest jinxes in sport. Earnhardt’s win was also the first 500 where the winner received more than $1 million, as he took home $1,059, 105.
The 2007 running of the Daytona 500 must rank as one of the most thrilling finishes in the track’s history, as Kevin Harvick beat out Mark Martin during the race’s green-white-checker last lap by 0.020 seconds. Harvick’s win was the closest margin of victory since the advent of computer scoring in 1993. Harvick’s win also denied veteran Martin his first 500 win in 23 attempts. Harvick’s win was also the first for car owner Richard Childress since the Earnhardt win in 1998, and his starting position of 34th spot was the lowest starting position of any Daytona 500 winner.

The 2008 Great American Race

Simply now known as the Daytona Speedweeks, the track opens its season for the running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona January 26, a 24-hour endurance sports car race, using parts of the Daytona oval along with an infield road course.
Then NASCAR officially opens its 2008 season with the running of the popular Budweiser Shootout February 9 for the Sprint Cup cars, along with the ARCA 200. For the rest of the week, fans will witness Daytona qualifying, the Gatorade Duel, the Chevy Silverado 250 for the Craftsman Truck series, the Camping World 300 for the Nationwide Series, and on February 17 the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

NOTES – The United States Senate recently designated February 17 and the running of the 50th Daytona 500 as “Race Day in America.”…the US Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration squadron will provide the flyover during the national anthem…the winner of this year’s Daytona 500 will receive a special gold-plated Harley Earl trophy, named after the former General Motors design chief…according to conducted studies, the Daytona 500 generates $1 billion in economic impact as NASCAR’s richest and most prestigious event.

Merry Christmas Nascar Campers

Ho-Ho-Ho, Merry Christmas Everyone!

I hope that Santa has been good to everyone and that there where not to many lumps of coal in your stockings this morning!

If you have kids, I hope you got some great pictures of them opening up there presents, its great to see their little smiles and amazement when they open their presents isn’t it!

Christmas is all about giving, let’s not forget that, if you have not done something for the less fortunate, it’s not too late, drop some money into a kettle at the mall for the Sally Ann, drop some bags of groceries off at the food bank, or give generously to your staff or neighbours.

And speaking of neighbours, I challenge everyone right now to pick up the phone or knock on their doors, and wish them a Merry Christmas. If you don’t get along with your neighbour, today is a “ truce” day, be the bigger person and go by, knock on their door, extend your hand and wish them a Merry Christmas, go on, you can do it!

Daytona Camping and RV Spots

If you are looking for Daytona RV Spots for the upcoming race, good luck, because prices are at a all time high.

Some people are just plain nuts in what they are asking, and I hope they get burned and dont sell that at all.

I have almost sold out all my spots ( at cost I shall add), some people are charging double and almost triple the face value, SHAME!!!

There are still a lot of tickets left for seats, and if you want them buy them directly from the track, rather than scalpers, you will save a lot of money.

Tire Failures at Talladega

Did anyone else notice a greater amount of tire failures this past weekend at Talladega?

Seems like the spring race there was not one tire that went down that I can remember.

I do recall many drivers stating they could run the entire race on the same set!

So, what happened this race?

Did NASCAR ask for a softer tire?

hmmmmm

Carpentier coming to cup?

Patrick Carpentier could be the next open-wheel driver to make the move to the Nextel Cup Series. Ray Evernham, the minority owner of Gillett Evernham Motorsports, said the Canadian-born Carpentier is a candidate to replace Scott Riggs in the #10 car next season. "That's going to be up to [George] Gillett," Evernham said of GEM's majority owner. "I know he's one of the people being considered. They'll make that decision." Gillett has said Carpentier, who replaced Riggs at the Watkins Glen road course earlier this year, could drive in at least one Cup race during the championship chase. Evernham added that he will have three full-time Cup teams and possibly two full-time Busch teams in 2008, and that his goal of becoming a four-car team likely won't happen until 2009. Thanks to ESPN for this.

Kevin Harvick Poem

Oh Mr. Harvick You’re such a funny man Pickin’ on poor JPM In front of all those fans

Y’all were really pretty funny Like a cat fight on TV I swear, your little “girly” shoves Almost made me pee

Now I don’t mind you getting’ mad That’s the competitor in you But remind yourself, who’s seat you took And who’s watching what you do

When Mr. Goodwrench got upset He didn’t act like some schoolyard kid He’d get behind you, raise up your rear And send you spinning in a skid

It really would be a funny thing To watch y’all scratch and claw some more But then again, our Mr Goodwrench would never Pick on a guy who’s five foot-four.

So the next time you feel your temper About to run right off its track Remember the man you took over for And think before you act

Don’t just get even, get ahead The next time someone makes you lose your cool Please keep your temper on the track And think “What would Dale Earnhardt do”?

Watch out its Busch on the inside.

So there I was watching the race trying to figure out what the new track was going to race like, and did I see right? was that 3 wide racing at one point!!??

Yup 3 wide for a few seconds, till calmer heads prevailed and then back to only 2 wide.

Only 2 wide?

For those of you that have been sleeping, D.W., dug up the track in a ceremonial picture taking right after the fall race last year, and just like I witnessed at Talladega, up came the track and the entire infield as well.

Well, the racing was interesting, drivers basically did not know where to race as the track was fresh, not much rubber was put down yet, and little was known as to can 2 trucks run side by side, not just at one time, but for the whole night.

Well, not everyone was lucky enough to do any testing at the track, so I was expecting that that might be an excuse being given to explain any bonehead moves that where made that night.

Oh, and speaking of Bonehead moves, Kyle Bonehead, ...I mean Busch, did his usual tonight.

So, there I was watching Bonehead racing Travis, and then they got side by side, Busch coming in and under Travis, and I thought to myself immediately.... how long will this last until Busch does something stupid....

Well I barely got the thought registered when......sure enough Busch took out Travis.

Lets back up a little first....

Remember last year when he took out his own brother, doing a move that we all knew what the outcome was going to be, he dove on the inside, with way to much speed, and then wrecked his brother and himself. Needless to say, the only people that enjoyed that where the fans!

Well tonight he was caught on his mic talking to his crew chief, that he really did not know how to race this track, inside groove, outside groove, man and here is almost the exact quote he said " unless we just take him out you know!?"

After practise, there was a great video clip of him being interviewed and he said " we really dont know whats going to happen", something to that effect, meaning the team did not have the truck set-up right and maybe was just guessing what the set-up should be.

There was a very telling video clip of him looking over to a crew member whom came to the drivers rear side and inserted the big ole ratchet to adjust the track bar, Kyle looks over at him with a look like " hey whatever that wont work" with a big smile..... to make matters worse the crew member sheepishly smiled back.

Now I dont know if its Kyle or the way his cars and trucks are set-up, but man are they ever loose!

Sure loose is fast, but at what expense?

Sure he is young and can control a loose car coming out of the corner like nobodies business, but tonight it apparently bit him and Travis as well.

Travis's comments where priceless, " we thought we gave him enough room..."

The New Banking at Bristol Motor Speedway

Are the drivers driving this new track in the right groove?

The new track is reported at 24 degrees at the bottom transitioning up to 30 degrees at the top.

6 degrees is a HUGE amount of banking.

To me this gets me nervous when driving my motorcoach especially through the Jellico Mountains of Tennessee!

The reason why I am asking this, is that here I am watching Nascar Craftsman Truck qualifying and they are not using the high groove.

To me I wonder why, as this would allow a higher speed around the top.

It would be interesting to see Junebug run this new track and see if he takes advantage of the higher banking or not.

Some might say that it is farther around the top, but this would be eliminated by less of a transition between off and on the throttle because of it being a short-track.

Possibly the drivers are simply not used to the track as they have always raced it this way before.

Ryan Mathews who has come to bristol for the 1st time ever summed it up correctly when he said " I have watched the racing here for years on TV but with the new track surface I cant apply anything of what I know."

Wiser words could never have been spoken by a rookie, maybe some veterans need to pay attention to what this kid is saying.

When I watch them pick their line through the corner, it is exactly like they are racing the old track, maybe they just need to be reminded of the new "grooves" and banking around this newly surfaced track.

As I write this Travis just jumped to the provisional pole position, I I noticed that he used the second groove up the track all the way around the corners.

Drivers getting fed up with Montoya

It was only a matter of time.

Either way you look at it, Montoya is a Rookie.

As a pilot, I can have 20,000 hours in a type, say all left seat time in a 747-400 series.

But, if I make a move to a Citation X, I still would be a " rookie" of sorts, and would need to spend a lot of time in a simulator, and right seat.

Hence the comparison.

Drivers are openly venting their frustrations about Montoya now, it looks like the honeymoon is over, it will be interesting to see who takes it upon themselves to be the " father figure" if you will, and issue some justice " Nascar Style".

My take on all of this is as follows.

It is hard to forget the mentality and everything that he has learned in the open wheel series, as these cars stick like Bees on honey. Now he moves over to slow buckets of steel that slide as easy as Bees on ice.

How does one " re-train" there minds and " re-learn" a sport?

I remember a conversation I had with a instructor of the Richard Petty Driving School, when I asked what the biggest challenge was with people coming to take the course. He said that people just go to slow in the corners, they think that the car will lose its grip and spin out. He went on further and said that people are used to a skinny 6 inch tire or so, and now they have 4 monsters a foot across.

With Montoya, he needs to understand that the incredible downforce in open wheel cars is simply not here with the cup cars, and needs to drive them like I used to drive my motorbike in the winter in Canada, slow and as upright as possible!.

So Juan Pablo Montoya, here is my advice to you.

1. Settle down

2. You dont need to impress anyone by making agressive moves.

3. Hang in the back of the pack and watch others and learn from them.

4. Drive your car like it is a fragile thing like your old open wheel cars.

In closing, remember that movie " Walking Tall"? The famous line out of that movie was " Walk softly, but carry a big stick..."

RCR and DEI to merge engine shops

Over the next few years RCR and DEI will merge their engine operations together with the building of a new engine shop.

Makes you wonder why does it not?

Is this done to reduce costs?

Or, make better engines?

Or to compete better against hendrick and Rousch-Fenway?

Maybe a combination of all the above.

You would think it would be a natural fit with Theresa Earnhardt and Richard Childress, what with all their history together and all.

It also might be the beginning of a potential larger master plan, to see how this partnership goes, and to maybe lay the way for a more lucrative partnership together.

This would allow them to take on all newcomers and challenge other teams.

Join our Chase for the cup contest

So, with thanks to Shirley, here is an idea I knew that I would finally have a reason to use that "idea" bulb Its to late for us to have our own cup race amongst members, but how about we have a contest for who will win the chase for the cup? This year it is 12 drivers up from 10 from the past. So, here is what I am thinking, you all have till the first race in September to start to do your homework and who is going to win. Up to the dropping of the green flag you can get your pick ready. Then it will be a race to see who wins. I will put up a jacket, just like the one that I present at Daytona, those nice winter/spring jackets like the teams wear, not the nylon ones, but the $ 250.00 ones I will let you pick your favourite driver and size of jacket. How does this sound???

For more information please come visit our Nascar Camping Forum at

Who is going to win the Chase for the Cup?

Jeff Gordon Breaks Dale Earnhardts Record

Dale Earnhardt would have been 56 today.

1 year ago this weekend my girls and I where paying respect to him at Talladega by viewing the special museum display that was set up at Talladega for him.

The crowd also paid tribute to him as it was an "official" salute to him at this race also.

There was also a black tie event that weekend for him.

Last weekend Jeff Gordon paid tribute to him as a proper Gentlemen would when he tied his record by flying the number 3 flag in his car on his victory lap at Phoenix.

So, how fitting and incredibly ironic that today Jeff Gordon would break Dale Earnhardts record.....on his birthday.....

" I got no friends out here", a famous line that Gordon has used in the past where not uttered today, as he won under caution.

But, a great day was again ruined by some classless fans whom started to throw bottles on the track and even toilet paper( at least someone listened to jr, as he asked them to throw toilet paper rather than bottles and other drinks).

So I started to think why is this being done, and is this strictly a " nascar" problem?

While I was thinking about this I was watching Hockey Night in Canada, it is the playoff game Anaheim Mighty Ducks vs Vancouver, being played in Vancouver.

The fans are singing the National Anthems, and the Canadians are even singing along with the American Anthem, wow this is class, these are great fans I am thinking....well they are Canadians right?...they would never throw things on the ice would they?

Hmmmmmm.....yes I do remember some things being thrown on the ice in the past.....was that in Canada though.....?

Lets look at Baseball, remember that time when the fans all threw the balls that they where given at the gate onto the field? A brilliant marketing idea turned into a rather stupid and embarrassing moment, where was that game played?

Soccer?, heck lets not go there, over in Europe they burn stands, people killed, yikes, it makes a few beers thrown on the track look like a tea party!

But, what can we do about this problem?

Well, some today mentioned a total ban on coolers ,bottles, and even a ban on selling beer after a certain time.

Maybe Jeff Gordon should just stop winning races.

How would I explain that one to my daughter....

Come visit us at NASCAR CAMPERS DONT THROW THINGS ON THE TRACK

Robert Yates Racing to sell to DEI?

Yup, just heard this, this would make a new DEI of 5 cars, this could also be what DEI would need to remain viable without Junior........

Nascar Foundation Track Walk

The NASCAR Foundation Track Walk Returns to Dover International Speedway

NASCAR Drivers and Celebrities Participating in Annual Fundraising Event

The NASCAR Foundation Track Walk is once again returning to Dover International Speedway on Saturday, June 2, following the Dover 200, NASCAR Busch Series race (ESPN2, 2:30 p.m. EST). NASCAR fans will get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk the “Monster Mile” while raising money for worthy causes.

The 2007 Track Walk will mark the fourth annual event hosted by the Dover, Del. facility and will kick-off the start of The NASCAR Foundation’s charity walk season. Fans will be able to experience the grooves of the famous Monster Mile with the added benefit of walking with well-known members of the NASCAR community.

This year’s event brings several drivers and charity representatives together to walk in the name of their non-profit organizations including NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, J.J. Yeley, Ward Burton and Dale Jarrett. The Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Women’s Auxiliary of Motorsports (WAM) will also be joining the festivities.

As an added incentive to the Track Walk in Dover, walkers are able to raise additional funds for the charities through the online fundraising campaign. Registered walkers that raise over $100 are eligible for some unique prizes. This is a great way to involve family and friends that may not be able to participate in the walk.

The Dover event is the first of many charity walks this race season in which fans can participate and get a driver’s perspective of the tracks. The Track Walks are popular events for fans and members of the community and provide entertainment while helping out The NASCAR Foundation and its Family of Charities.

Registration fees are $30 for each individual. Children under the age of 14 can participate for free, but must be accompanied by a paying adult. Participants can register to walk with one of the special guest’s groups or in the general walking group. Fans are also able to create their own webpage and encourage family and friends to support them in their fundraising efforts.

Proceeds from this Track Walk will benefit The NASCAR Foundation and its Family of Charity organizations that participate in the event.

What a Ebay Scam looks like

WANT IT NOW is a place to put requests up for items you want or can not find a current listing for. It is not intended to put you in direct contact with other eBayers to do a deal outside of eBay. I can NOT stress to anyone the dangers of dealing with people outside of eBay...I just baited in a scammer to share with you the dialogue of what they do to try to lure people out of their money for tickets. I will be MORE than happy to take a look at ANY kind of offer you get outside of eBay and give you my opinion on it…

Just wanted to share with everyone a "situation" that arose...

Chris "NASCARCAMPING" posted a listing on the "WANT IT NOW" section on eBay for Pocono tickets...and received the following message back through eBay:

Chris contacted me about it since something didn't feel right about this...so this is where I took over...

THIS IS THE ACTUAL EMAIL CONVERSATION:

I see you are interested in Fence Line for Pocono Race Tickets, I want to tell you that i have 8 tickets for sale,i will wait your mail if you are intersted in making a cheap deal.If you respond do not reply to this message. You can reach me of yahoo messenger(my id scott_mcgee21) or you can contact me directly in the same mail.
Notice how he didn’t put his full email address on it…that is because the eBay filtering system would not have let this message go through if he would have attached @yahoo.com to his message he sent through their system
Thank you and have a nice day

ME
I would like more information on the race tickets you have for Pocono. Thanks.

Scammer:
Tell me please for which date are you interesed.Thank you (Wait didn't he already tell me what date? hmmmmmmmm something is fishy already)

Scammer:
Ok.We will make this deal through ebay (square trade ) it's safe for both and it's very fast end easy. All i need is your full name and address and your user id from ebay to proceed .
I will forward your info to ebay and they will contact you with the instructions .Thank you (Square Trade is NOT a method of dealing outside of eBay…it is a mediator program so that IF your transaction through eBay has a problem, they will mediate and help with resolution…they are in no way shape or form a place to initiate a transaction. Clever too how he wants my full name and address…perhaps so he can make the bogus email he is going to send look “official”.)
ME
Oh so this will be a private auction of sorts, as I really don't want to let these seats get away! My eBay id is Phil_McCrackenPA ...when will these ship and how much is the shipping...if I want more tickets will they be available??

Scammer:
Please let me know if you want to buy them and reply me with your info for i can start the shipping.ebay Square Trade is a new service used by ebay for offer protection to the customers and for theyr money . Customers pay for theyr goods and they keep the payments untill they will receive the tickets and after they have received the tickets Square Trade provide the payment informations to the sellers. I will wait your mail soon if you are agree to proceed . Thanks (Is it me, or am I picking up on some broken English??)

ME
Yes, I definitely want the six tickets...if I take all eight will you offer a break on the price. You want 150 per ticket...I would be willing to offer 1000.00 for all eight tickets that would include shipping.

(I figure I might as well haggle for imaginary seats...WHAT is it going to hurt??)

Scammer:
Ok.The price for all 8 tickets is 1000$ with shipping taxes included.

(Wooohoooo a scammer you can deal with...REFRESHING!!)

Ok.You will receive the an invoice from eBay Square Trade regarding our deal, you will know all details to complete this transaction .Let me know when you receive the invoice and also when you will be able to complete the deal.Thank you

Not too long after this I received a "very official" looking email from "Square Trade".

I apologize for it being unclear...but notice the Square trade logo AND the tell tale sign it is a classic scam...WESTERN UNION!!! He EVEN has the audacity to put a bogus eBay item number on the notification. (eBay item numbers do not have any letters in them…all numbers) If ANYONE every wants you to pay through Western Union…RUN…Western Union is the ultimate “catch me if you can” payment method. Once you pay through Western Union, you give a name the payment is to go to, and they give you a confirmation number. You then give that information back to the scammer as your proof of payment…and he can show up at ANY location in the world, or even two blocks away from you and get his money. That is what makes it so difficult to catch these kind of people. With the combination of eBay and Paypal the transaction is insured, and secure.
So that is when I decided to let him in on MY little scam....

ME
Scott, Albert...whatever your name is this week...YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION to me!!!! YOU are the reason why I work extra hard to alert people about scams such as yours. Thank you so much for all of your time, and enlightening me to how your little twisted scam works.

When you meet your maker I hope you can look him in the eye...you know it is never too late to get right with yourself.

M.

Needless to say, I have not heard back from him on this transaction and probably won’t. As you can see...he is VERY polite, and attempts to assure me by offering buyer/seller protection. He even gave me a break on the price. It ALMOST makes you want to believe this guy and thinks he has good intentions. Do not fall for it...if it does not go through eBay...you will not be going through the gates at the event. What is funny as a "test" I decided to post TWO want it now listings under my name today, one for Indy 500 tickets and Talladega tickets..and guess what...He wrote to me, identical message stating he has eight tickets, but guess what, in one day his yahoo id had changed to walker_davison46. I apparently didn't repsond in enough time for this screen name, as I have not heard back from him.

Find a reputable seller who has a listing posted...
Don’t let a seller find YOU!!

With the “want it now” option…the ONLY thing you should get as a response is a notification through your eBay message system that has a link to an auction that is already posted…NEVER a chance for someone to make a deal for you outside of eBay. If you will notice on that first notification it DID come from eBay, but it did state is was being sent anoymously and there is a BIG warning from eBay on the side advising people not to participate in this type of transaction.

Chris is planning on getting a page up on the website about this scam, and hopefully we can get the word out to keep this from happening to other people!

Again, I am always willing to take a look at any auction, or offer you receive. I can smell a rat a mile away...

Ebay Scams through Square Trade

If you are a fellow nascar lover, you will no doubt at times be looking for tickets to a sold out event.

A year ago to date I discovered ebay and have been very happy to date in getting tickets and even selling a few.

What I hate though is all the scammers that are out there.

I recently had a scam artist try to get me, and I handed it over to one of our forum members whom has written articles on ebay in relation to scam artists.

Melissa's articles can be read on our fan forum and also our website.

I strongly encourage anyone whom is thinking of buying on ebay to come and read her articles.

Super Car

Yup, thats a good name Jeff Hammond and I agree :)

Seriously folks what else would you want to name a car that is all about Safety?

Today the young kid called Kyle Busch won, and trying to be the closest anyone can to Tony Stewart he joined ranks with him and declared his toughness to the world by saying " The car sucks"

Well... thanks for that Kyle....

Didn't seem to suck for you today though....if memory serves me right, didn't you win...?

Then again, maybe you dont know what a Super Car is, or the memories it brings back to me and other 40 somethings ( plus)

For me with that wing on the back it brings back memories of Superbirds with pavement hammering Hemi's, or what I say .." When men where men and cars where cars.."

I like the name SuperCar, or Super car...

Lets see, it is safer, so that is good, it is supposed to make it a level playing field, so that.....whoops this we will see about, the jury just left the room on that one....

So, I officially will declare that the " Car of Tommorow " is here, and that the use of that name is now " past tense"

The use of the phrase " Car of Today" is also destined for the history books, as the use of the 3 letters COT are the same and confusing.

The name for the car needs to be one that explains what it is, and what it is all about, and better yet what it will become.

Even today, if you dont think that the teams are going to burn the midnight oil, think again, this is like the lead up to Daytona, the knowledge that was learned today will be huge, you may not know it, but the teams learned volumes from the race today, and will apply it for future races.

Will they share what they learned is another thing though......

Here is what I learned and what I will share with the world.

1. The front Splitter as Larry McReynolds pointed out may have been responsible for cutting down a tire today.

2. My suggestion to nascar is to modify the front of the bottom portion, ( what I am going to call the " garbage collector"). The outside of it needs to be shaved down a small amount, so it does not stick into the wind as Jeff Hammond pointed out to us today down at the Hollywood Hotel. I also want to compliment everyone at Fox and the boys for putting that video clip together so fast for all of us watching at home, you pointed out something that probably Nascar did not even know about. I guess future races will be the proof of the pudding so to speak, to see if this becomes true or not.

3. The back trunk lids seemed to work well enough today and with the extra cables attached kept the spoilers attached and the trunk attached, lets see if Martinsville is as nice to them as Bristol was.

4. The front splitter with the steel bolts that attach the top to the bottom part needs work though. I think it was the 29 car that had one of those bolts bust off the top part, and was just bouncing around. What I was waiting for was for it to "catch" a hole or crack in the track and then that would busted the whole thing off. Possibly a wire attached to them could prevent extra debris from flying around if this happened., not to mention the bolt itself.

All in all they seemed to hold together fairly well.

5. The " Garbage Collector" might have to be re-thought, as I can see from an airodynamic viewpoint that at some time this will collect garbage and lead to a hot motor as the air intakes are down there also.

Nextel Trackpass Today on Fox

Today I was a little happier with the Trackpass. I was listening to the 99 car and the guys covering it.

First Hermie Sadler was one of the reporters so that is a step in the right direction.

Second, the lead reporter was always asking for help, especially to Hermie, so that was good to hear.

Third, they never cut the guys mic's off when at commercial, so that was cool, listening to them go on about other stuff and what they where going to talk about next, etc... That I liked, keep it up!

I especially liked when they interviewed Carl Edwards Coach driver, anytime they include anything about Rv';s or Motorcoaches my ears stand up!. Man today he looked like Tom Hanks when he did that movie when he was stranded on the desert island, that beard is getting long, better get the young guns ready!

Sponsors, there is an opportunity to make headlines, get some razors and shaving cream ready and when Carl wins, shave his drivers face!

I guess what I am going to have to do, is listen to all the reporters and find out " who is who" on air. I am imagining that there are different reporters for each drivers, as I was listening to Michael Waltrip, .......would anyone want to guess who he was covering....? Thats right.... the 44 car Dale Jarrett..... What did you guys and gals all think, and who did you watch?

Dont forget to visit our fan forum at our main website which is at WE love Camping at Nascar Races!

Nascar Cup Race today at Las Vegas

Well, we did not get the " Big One" like a lot of people said we where going to get

I am glad, so is Smoke I am thinking....:)

It was interesting though in learning that Nascar mandated a tire pressure of 62 lbs in the right front tire, I have never heard of a tire pressure that high on a car before, has anyone else

Man sometimes I hear them at 11 lbs of air, 62 lbs is almost entering RV territory, actually I think my Class C rig ran with 65 lbs!

Cant wait till we hear from Don and Deb, in watching Track Pass today, they had a lot of shots with the mountains in the backgrounds, that sure must have been a pretty site!

Yesterdays Busch Race at Las vegas Motor Speedway

Did you watch the Nascar Busch Race yesterday?

All in all, a great race, a record amount of cautions yes, but the thing that bothered me the most was at the end of the race.

To me it looked like Busch deliberately tried to take out Burton.

Burton was coming on like a bat out of hell, and Busch knew it.

Right at the end, Busch swerved over towards Burton, like he was trying to take him out.

If the roles where reversed, Burton would have pulled over and let Busch go by.

I would like to see the replay of this again, but deliberate or not, I think Busch should be a little bit more careful.

Enjoy the race today, till then see us online at NASCAR CAMPERS

Toronto RV Show and Sale

If you are looking for a new RV check out Canada's largest RV show this weekend at the International centre in Toronto, right across from Toronto Airport.

This is a huge show, pop-ups to 45 foot coaches and everything in between.

You can easily spend an entire day there, I highly recommend this show it is much better than the show held at the congress centre.

Free parking to boot!

Drop by the Sicard RV booth they are at door number 4, ask around for me or look for the big ugly guy!

Colonel Sanders 1st Restaurant in Corbin Kentucky

For about 15 years I plowed I-75 North and South and always wanted to stop at Colonel Sanders 1st ever restaurant in Corbin Kentucky, but I always said to myself .." self, wait for the day you are married and can share this with your family.."

So, after all these years, I finally stopped with my girls and went and explored Colonel Sanders 1st ever restaurant.

Frankly it is more than I expected, I had no idea all the history and the story behind the man. You might not be able to read all the signs in the restaurant if you dont have time, but 15 minutes would be good to see everything.

If you got the time, take a good look around the restaurant and look at all the displays and history.

Later on I will post more of a complete story, because I must have 50 pictures in total of everything!

Some hints if you are in your RV and passing through.

The parking lot is small, if you got anything bigger than a 30 footer and towing a car, I would not attempt trying to get into the parking lot. Also, dinner hours are busier with the locals, so parking might be less for your rig.

If you got a big rig and towing I suggest the following.

There is a KOA right at the exit on I-75, great hosts, I have stayed there twice.

If you want to just park your rig and unhook your toad, there is a Loves Travel Stop also at the same exit, I usually fill up with Diesel here.

There is also a Wally World at the same exit, you can also park and un-hook there. I bought my daughters DVD player there and the wife did a lot of shopping there also.

A quick tip to those with big rigs and heavy trailers, Kentucky and Tennesee are very hilly, so make sure your engines are up to temp, and get ready to use that pedal, some of the on ramps are short and up to 15 degrees of slope to get up to the Interstate, and then you are faced with a 7-10 degree grade on top of that. Dont be afraid to floor it literally, with my rig I had the pedal all the way to the floor a few times!

Fox,ESPN coverage of the 1st two Nascar Races

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the coverage of the race this past weekend.....stunk.

First off, we are watching the Busch race on tv at California Speedway this weekend, and I am sitting watching Brent Musberger another guy whos name escapes me but I know he is an old crew chief, and another guy who looks like a basketball player.

So Brent Musberger is talking, and I say.." why is he here, and the other guy who I said looked like a basketball player?...well he starts talking about.... you guessed it, basketball..!"

So, just at that moment, my wife walks into the room, looks at the tv, and
says..." whats up with this?"

Then this guy starts to compare nascar to basketball?

and Brent Musberger.....man...boooorrrrrrrinnnggggg.......

and lets not talk about Nextel Fan Pass, you know those extra channels that you have to subscribe to, man what a dissapointment these last two races, give us back what we had last year!

And lets not forget about Fox and this new 3d thing, what a joke!

Remember when Fox started to cover hockey a few years ago, and they added that blue streak behind the puck?

They got laughed out of Canada!

Lets not get into the cameras on the track, hey are all the camera operators drunk or something? Man I am getting vertigo watching!

Smarten up guys and do the job properly!

Mouse Report

So after placing 4 mouse traps yesterday, guess what?

I caught one mouse :)

Just where I thought I would, in the pantry by the kitchen, where there was the most activity.

So, I thought I would continue cleaning up, and good thing I did, because I found and threw out about another 100 lbs of paper and books, magazines, etc... that are no longer needed.

I also took all the blankets, and linen home to be washed.

All this cleaning up is great, hard on my back, but all in all a good thing!

Getting rid of all the junk that we really dont need to haul around is a good thing, and the clothes, wow, we had 10 of everything!

For those of you who dont have a washer/dryer in their motorhome, once you do get one, you will be amazed by how little clothes you really need to carry. We tend to wash a load every day while in the bus, so for me I can get by with just a few of everything.

Another thing I think I will get rid of, is the 50lbs of extra tiles in the back closet, thanks to the manufacturer for giving them to me, but maybe its about time they where stored somewhere else also.

Monday I am going to also clean all the food out of the other cabinets that are sealed inside the slides( mice cant get at them).

There is also all the clothes inside the back closet hanging up, they will all come out also.

After this, I will concentrate on the front of the bus, and go through all the other cabinets.

All in all, I bet we will have lightened our load by about 200 lbs or more

Koni RV Shocks

If you read our website you will remember my post about The Koni shocks that I put on my coach last year.

Actually it might have been 2 years ago, but lets start over shall we?

My 2004 Coach was undershocked right from the factory, this coach and the whole line of them should never have been released for sale.

As with most coaches they come with stock Monroe shocks which on mine where terrible right from the get-go.

Sure the coach drove fine at the start, but I think these shocks wore out very quickly.

Somewhere around the 10-12k mark, I looked for a shock to replace them with.

I looked at Bilstein and Koni.

At first I was leaning towards the Bilstein, but there was one huge problem, they kept telling me they where behind schedule in making them for my coach!

Its not like my coach is a one-off either, it is built on a very popular frame.

So, I then looked at Koni.

What impressed me was that the twin tube Koni was adjustable.

This at first I did not like so much, but after researching more and talking to Justin at Koni Shocks, I felt more comfortable with my decision.

I was one of the 1st people to put the twin tube Koni's on my coach design, and we left the Koni's at the softest setting.

After the Koni's where installed the difference was noticeable immediately.

Even before I got on the road, I noticed less side to side rock and roll, which is very prevalent to motorhome drivers.

When I got the coach up to speed, I was amazed by the difference, actually giggling like a little kid, I just could not believe how much of a difference it made!

I kept this set-up for a trip from Canada down to Florida and ran around the State, went to Daytona, then over to Talladega, over to Atlanta then back home to Canada.

After getting back home, I had the shocks set up 1 turn, as I thought the rebound was just a little bit to much.

This is what the Koni is all about and where it shines, being totally adjustable.

After setting it up 1 turn, the rebound was less than before so I was happy with the results.

After another year I talked to Justin at Koni Shocks and found out that the new FSD Koni shock was going to be made for my coach soon.

I had heard a lot about the Koni FSD shock, it was for high end coaches only like Prevost and other Tag Axle coaches.

So, when Justin told me they where now being made for my coach, I quickly got 8 of them shipped to me.

Before they where installed my mechanic took it for a ride for a " before and after" report.

After installing the Koni FSD Shocks, my mechanic took it for a test drive and said that it did drive better than before.

I just took it out today for a 1 hour test drive, and I can happily say that yes I to think that the Koni FSD RV Shocks are better than the red twin tube Konis.

If you go to Koni's website you can read more about the Koni FSD Shocks and what they are all about at KONI FSD RV SHOCKS

The big test for the new FSD will be when I can find a road with a lot of quick expansion strips, and I know one road in particular that I want to check out, the Osceola Parkway I think it is on the way into Disney World, man the distance with the bumps on the bridge every 50 feet or so, it is a very unnerving feeling!

So, if you can, I suggest you get the new FSD over the twin tube if they are available for your coach, not that the twin tube was bad in any way, not at all. Its just that the new FSD is better:)

Thats all for now, when I do find that road with the right succession of bumps I will let you know how they did.

Till then visit our Nascar Camping website at Camping at Nascar Races

Mice clean up patrol

Well a day after finding visitors in our coach, we went out and cleaned out all the leftovers that they left for us, man they sure can make a mess!.

But, we had to laugh, because we found about 50 skittles in a drawer in the back of the coach, along with a 1 inch piece of kit kat chocolate bar, all stuffed inside a drawer full of underwear and socks, but the interesting thing is, is that they where originally about 30 feet towards the front of the coach in different drawers!

So, the little munchkins where pretty busy, I will say that much!

Lessons learned.

All the cabinest that are inside and under our slides seemed to escape with no damage done to the interior contents, the reason why, is that they are " IN" the slide, and there is no access points for the critters to crawl into the cabinets.

All of the access points that we found where done through the roof, so cabinets in the bathroom, isle sink, kitchen and bedroom where all joined to the roofline.

This explains things.

They also found there way into the ducts in the roof I think, when we put the heat pumps on, there was a lot of junk flying around inside the coach.

So, we emptied all our clothes into a dozen garbage bags, ( man we haul a lot of clothes around), and also emptied all the other stuff in the kitchen and 2 baths.

All in all, we probably gained 100 lbs in CCC!!!!

So, when we where all done cleaning, out came 4 mouse traps, 1 went on the sink top, 1 in the pantry and 2 more in the back, 1 in the bathroom cabinet, cant remember where I put the other one....?

I had better remember or else I am in for a surprise.

I stuufed the traps with cheese, I could not use peanut butter due to allergies with my daughter.

Tommorow I will go back and see if I caught any of them.

Till then take a look at our Nascar Campers website which can be found at NASCAR CAMPING

I got mice

Yup, went into the rig today, and found some mouse droppings, yuk!, oh well might as well buy that Navigator....

Maybe my current rig knew that I was test driving that navigator and is paying me back.....

Shades of Steven Kings " Christine" flashed through my head.....

Man what a mess they made.

2006 Holiday Rambler Navigator 43PDQ Test Drive

Today I took out a 2006 Holiday Rambler Navigator 43PDQ for a test drive, and here is my report.

This is the first time I have driven a Detroit Series 60 equipped Motorcoach, and the difference was noticeable immediately with the different noise this engine makes. The series 60 sounds like a Jet engine!

The detroit is a 14 Litre Motor rated at 515HP., and 1650Lb of torque.

Horsepower to weight ratio of 1 HP per 1,000 pounds of coach weight is up on this coach, for example companies usually try to get it close to this formula, my coach has a 330HP motor for 32,000lbs of weight.

This coach has 515HP for what I guessed would be a gross weight loaded of 45,000lbs. The gross weight I calculated on what we currently carry in our coach.

So, as you can see the HP to weight ratio is higher which in math should equate to better pick-up.

Something not talked about, but more critical to a diesel motor is torque, and this engine produces 1650 lbs, compared to my 950 in mine.

The allison 4000 series transmission is maxed out at 1650, in 2007-8 you will see the Allison rated at 1850 to handle the new Cummins ISX which will be rated at 600HP.

2007 also saw new laws in relation to pollution controls, so this motor will be the last of those.

This was also the biggest coach that I have ever driven, although just 4 feet longer, the wheel base was only 14 inches longer than mine.

However, the wheel cut is a few degrees more than mine, so in tight situations they most likely would equal out.

This coach also is a tag axle equipped rig, so it was also my first time to use the tag dump switch in a tight turn in a parking lot.

It is also equipped with a 2-stage Jake, which is new for me as My coach has a Pac brake.

Leaving the yard, after swinging wider than I usually do, I noticed still a lot of room on my right side as I cleared the corner, but heck better safe than sorry right?

My 6 year daughter now practises this in shopping malls when pushing the shopping buggies!

After shifting up through the gears which takes awhile, as 6th gear usually does not happen till your doing between 60-65.

Navigating through a small town, the length of 3-4 feet longer really did not seem apparent at all.

After driving another 10 miles I came up to a stop sign that I have approached a hundred times before, and started my slow down procedure at about the same place.

This coach with its 2 stage jake can slow you down very quickly as I found out.

1st lets back up a bit.

I have owned 2 coaches with 3000 series Allison transmissions.

This coach has a 4000.

The difference between the 2 is huge, the 4000 shifts up and down a lot smoother, handing off the shifts like butter.

Slowing down using the Jake is alot different than using a Pac on a 3000.

When engaging the Pac with a 3000, the downshifting is immediate, violent and at times not so comfortable.

With the 4000 and the Jake, the downshifting is not as violent, rather nice actually!

Now, the chance to also test the 2 stage feature.

After turning on the Jake, I then switched on the 2 stage feature to low, which closes 3 of the Detroits 6 cylinders exhaust valves.

This slowed us down in a nice uniform manner, and no violent downshifting like I am used to!

I decided to switch it to high, which now closed all 6 cylinders, and the pitch forward of my body could be felt immediately.

The braking horsepower applied was so great, that I ended up switching back to Low, then turning it off altogether. I then had to accelerate a little bit before the stop sign!

After using the jake a few more times I discovered a method of using it that can help you to slow down smoothly and safely and help save your brakes also.

When approaching a stop sign or point, I turned on the jake on low, and after the initial g-force shove forward in your seat, I switched to high. This gets the coach slowed quickly, and even on hills the deceleration that is felt is linear, unlike the forces felt from a pac equipped coach.

How about the power you ask?

Yes it has more power than my coach, but not like comapring a Hemi to a Honda.

Pulling away from a stop, you could drive it like a car, the extra torque was apparent. Was it a huge difference in power? not really, a better test would be when we hook up our tow vehicle which will add another 3600 pounds to the coach.

But wait a minute, wont a bigger coach mean you cant get into smaller places?

A 40 foot coach is big enough, wont a 43,44 or 45 footer mean it might not fit in some campgrounds or Nascar Tracks?

Personally, I am more concerned with the wheelbase increase vs the extra 5 feet.

This is where things are getting a little blury... or confusing maybe for some people.

A 40 footer is a 40 footer correct?

Well maybe in name only.

My coach is called a 40 footer, but is actaully 2 inches short of that. Unless you add the tow bar, then its 41 feet.

Look at a new Sceptre, and you will find that a 40 footer is almost 41 feet.

But, look at the wheelbase of a Sceptre. This so called 40 footer has a longer wheelbase than a 43 foot Navigator.( which is almost 44 feet)

You cant do anything about the length, if you can only squeeze in 40 feet, then thats it.

But, in owning 3 coaches, and travelling around, how many times have I been in a situation where I was measuring by the inches allowed into a spot? ....Never.

Nope, not once.

But, what is more important is how many times have I had a tight corner to get around?

TONS, this is the more critical thing to worry about.

This is also where this coach and all Tag Axle coaches shine.

This tag axle 44 foot coach has a smaller wheelbase than a 40 foot coach manufactured by the same company!

How is this done you ask?

Well to begin with, a tag axle's wheelbase is measured from the drive axle, not the tag itself.

And, if you are in a tight turning situation, you can raise the tag, so you are not dragging it around corners.

Plus, on this coach, the steering radius is tighter due to a wheel cut which is greater than non tag axle coaches.

Also with this coach is a 1 piece windshield, which can really give you a better view and better judgement on picking a turning point.

All in all, the point to remember here, is longer is not always harder to drive.

You are probably noticing so far I have not said anything about the inside of the coach, its tv's etc...

Personally this stuff does not matter as much to me as to how it drives, handles, power etc..

That can be for another time, but at the end of a 1 hour test drive, I have to admit it was one of the nicest driving coaches and Navigators I have ever driven. Is a 43 footer in your cards?

Thats all for now folks, as always see more on our Nascar Website, we have added more goodies today, check out the " news" section to see whats new.

Campground and RV Park Reviews

So here we are plowing the highways and by-ways of North America, staying at different campgrounds and Rv parks along the way, so I thought all along why not write about them at the same time?

Why you ask?

Easy, not many people who rate these parks drive the type of rigs like I do, so relying on the books and reviews by others sometimes is like flying blind in a storm.

Also, many rely on the same parks for advertising dollars, so its easy to see that at times their reports are rather...questionable.

The criteria I have for parks is simple, so if you have a rig like I do, then you may find the reviews helpful. If you dont, you still will find them helpful, as I will report on the services that the entire park has for other types of rigs also.

I drive a 40 foot Diesel Pusher with 3 slides, and I tow my car behind, so I always like pull-thrus. I also prefer higher end parks with pools and playgrounds for my daughter. I dont penny-pinch when looking for a overnight spot, and I dont sleep in parking lots. 80% of the time I have the biggest rig in the campground. Now that 45 foot rigs are being allowed in Ontario guess what? yup, we probably will spring for a 2008 45 foot rig next. What this does is make it even harder for us to find a campground that meets what we need.

Do I read and use other campground directories?

Yes, I use Trailer-Life as a general guide and place to start.

But, there is always room for improvement, and in some places a lot of improvement.

Case in point, if you read Trailer Life, you will know their rating system of 3 numbers, like 6/8/9. A perfect park is rated 10/10/10.

Here in Canada we have one yes 1 campground rated 10/10/10.

So, I am sure you get the point how hard it is to get a rating like that.

But, what is in a rating you ask?

Well, I am not going to go into details how its done, but rather I want to share with you a story about how the numbers do not always add up.

For years I tried to get into a RV park south of Titusville on I-95 which had a perfect 10/10/10 rating. After 4 years of trying, I finally made it to the park to check it out.

Boy, was I glad I did.

There was no way I would ever had stayed in that park, not even if you paid me to.

What a disaster that was , I am so glad I went ahead to do a site inspection before paying for a spot there and regretting it. We where going to book for a 1-2 week period, and if we did and arrived there, we would have left after 1 day, and oh by the way, they had a no refund policy.

So, on our website look soon for the beginning of something that hopefully will grow into something great!

On the track at Daytona International Speedway

Daddy and Erika at the Start/Finish line at Daytona International Speedway, and yes we did sign it to!

Take a close look at this picture, click on it and make it bigger, and you will get a good idea on the slope of the track and how that slope ends at the yellow line. A hint to any driver whom is racing someone towards the checkered flag, use the slope to your advantage if you are on the inside or outside line and have room and clearance to cut down towards the bottom of the track, gravity equals more speed!

A special warning to any motorcycle racer that comes to daytona, beware of that crack, that will grab your front wheel and take you places!

Hi Daddy!

Looking back towards the start/finish line from down towards turn 1 at Daytona International Speedway

A view down cobblestone road at Daytona, and a couple silly girls playing in the grass.

If you put your mouse over this picture ( or any picture in this blog) and click on it, the picture will get bigger. Take a close look at how rough the track is now. Cold temperatures, a new harder tire, bumps in the corner all equals less traction

The yellow line divides the bottom of the slope of the track and the apron....but not always, meaning the degree of actual slope is different yes, but the apron does have a different degree of slope in places than the track. There are also some lonnnng cracks in places that may also disturb the car at places. Some drivers dont know this, and I suggest to any driver who is ever going to race at Daytona to get out of the car, put on your walking shoes and walk the entire track, especially the turns and take a close look at where the yellow line is on the bottom of the track. To stay with this theme, check out turns 1 and 2 and look at the bumps, turn 2 collects more cars, as it lightens them on the rebound. With the new harder tire Goodyear brought this year, it is more important than ever. Before I drive my motorhome I do a walk around, do a walkaround the track and get to know it personally.

I made this boys day, when I gave him a piece of the track!

Harvick Wins, or Martin Loses?

Did anyone else think that Mark Martin backed off at the end? Its like he thought they where going to throw the caution, but they dont do this on the last lap do they? When they interviewed him, he said " ...I thought they where going to throw the caution..." Why would he say that? Unless he felt like he made a mistake? It also looked like from one of the camera angles that he was leading Harvick by a half car length also. Will be interesting to see what happens. Congrats to Harvick! My neighbours beside me at Daytona are partying big time!, they are huge Harvick Fans!

Nascar Nextel Cup Hot Pass by DirectVu a huge failure and disappointment

So, the race started and guess what? .....NO FEED

Then it showed up after 30 minutes or so, and guess what?.....its not what I paid for!

Instead of the in-car camera shots and awesome sounds, and front and rear views from the cameras, we now get 3 to 4 different views all different drivers, heck one time I had Denny Hamlin on Tony Stewarts channel!

And what use is 3 or 4 views at the same time, when they are to small to even see them?

Also, I dont need another chanel of commentary, that is not the purpose of the in-car cameras, if I want to hear commentary, I will listen to the main network feed.

Reporters interviewing people, talking to much, blah, blah, blah, blah, enough already, scrap this new junk and give us back what we want!.

What a huge mistake and dismal failure.

What do you mean I cant keep the throttle wide open?

Has anyone noticed something different this time around during Speedweeks?

It seems that we hear a lot more this year that drivers cant keep the throttle wide open in the corners like they have been used to in the past.

After Goodyear brought a new tire that is harder than they have ever run at Daytona, drivers have hated it, and drivers have loved it.

Tony Stewart does not like it, he does not understand why Goodyear would change something that did not need to be changed. I guess he does not like all that sliding around. Granted he does a lot of dirt tracking, which is more being out of control than in control, but the speeds at Daytona can be 4 times faster than on dirt!

Other drivers love it, last night during the Busch race, Carl Edwards liked all the sliding around.

Why though did Goodyear bring a harder tire?

Well probably because Nascar asked them to.

Lets look though at the reasons behind this.

First off, I used to work for a tire manufacturer right in the factory, so I got quite involved in the tire industry.

Second, I have been on the track at Daytona, and right down on my hands and knees on the track, and I can tell you the track is..." well used.."

The track is old, and getting very abrasive.

Abrasive you say?

Wait till you see some up and close pictures of the track so you know what I mean.

But you will have to wait till tommorrow....

Craftsman Truck Race at Daytona International Speedway

A great race, and wow what a finish, just when you thought you knew who was going to win, bam, the trucks showed why they are so popular, things can change so quickly. One thing you can notice with the trucks, they can get up to speed a lot quicker than the cars can, with the extra 200 HP and all.

So, in keeping with my thread from yesterday, any more spotter concerns?

Well, Wallace, Bodine and Clanton all had situations that could have been avoided.

Lets look at Daytona and its challenges shall we?

To begin with, it is a huge track, this is not like a short track where you can read all the sponsors decals all the way around the track.

Hey its just racing right?

Depends if you want to look at it this way or look at it from a safety perspective.

So, what can be done to make it safer and easier for the teams and drivers?

Well maybe we look to tv cameras like those on the blimp for help.

Its not a big stretch for this to be done, have a second camera, or the same one, followed by a lcd monitor either in the spotters area, or pit box. This would allow the spotters to see real time closing speed distance and judgement on speed of approaching cars. It would also give them a view that they cant see at all presently, that being the closing speed and area of possible contact with cars approaching from the rear and the angles that they are approaching from.

This is all about safety, and saving lives, not mention saving teams huge dollars on cars not being smashed up!
