Minister offers words of wisdom during Nationwide prayer before the race at Daytona

Last year I heard a man of the cloth tell me that NASCAR does not care at all about what is right or wrong, morals or ethics, all they care about is MONEY.

I was basically stunned that he said this, not that it is not true, but for a man of faith to say this to me was incredible.

This person is very close to NASCAR and knows it inside and out.

Yesterday I heard Dr. Tim McNeil from the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach say " As we seek to build a new prosperity, May it be built on Gratitude instead of greed"

Big words and oh so true.

NASCAR sit up and take notice, the fans have said it, and now men of the cloth are saying it as well.

TSN drops NASCAR races in Canada

The emails, blogs, forum postings and even a new Facebook group has all popped up in the last 24 hours due to TSN dropping the coverage of NASCAR.

Fans across the country are extremely upset with the actions of TSN.

Especially after riding a wave of success from last weeks race in Montreal, its no wonder why Canadian Fans are upset with TSN.

The writer was also effected with this, luckily enough my wife realized we had it on Bell Expressvu on channel 440.

This is part of the premium package that you need to buy extra.

I will be contacting TSN for an official responce tommorow, right now there phones are jammed and I am lost in voice mail jungle.

No wonder I have already been contacted by a bunch of people upset with TSN over this.

Richard Petty Speaks-It's All About The Fans

Richard Petty without a doubt is the most respected voice of NASCAR, when THE KING SPEAKS people listen.

If they dont listen they are stupid.

Blunt, but here I am as a NASCAR fan, president and founder of this website, a RV'er, an entrepreneur, and I am wondering why NASCAR and the racetracks themselves dont listen when the KING SPEAKS.

Here is a run down and how I think NASCAR has basically dug a hole for themselves, and is now trying to dig themselves out of it.

NASCAR has learned a lot about marketing, and many can learn from them.

But, after awhile the hype starts to look and sound questionable, especially if you cant back up the claims that you make.

This I can speak from experience and knowledge as I own a marketing and advertising company.

The hype has reached an all time high, but then again it gets more and more each race lately so I reserve that statement for a later date.

But, when does the fan say, " how stupid do you think I am"?

The anger has risen each year as NASCAR and many attached to it, simply keeps putting prices up, and as many state take more away each and every year.

Things came to a boiling point this year with the Daytona 500 and the false advertising they did, and the clubhouse at Lake Lloyd being taken away from them.

This started a flurry of media activity, and cost them alot, especially after the unethical way they handled the entire affair.

From a personal level, it cost them about $ 100,000.00 in lost revenue for next years race as my entire group will not be going back.

It also cost them a documentary being planned, " The road to Daytona-The first 50 years."

We where ready to go and then my phone rang , friends in Daytona told me the bad news about what Daytona did.

One associate had his bus being driven down by his driver, my driver was ready to go, all the supporting cast was ready, and then the bombshell dropped.

So, the first thing that NASCAR needs to do is clean up its own shop and return to a ethical and moral running of all its operations, and in that I mean the tracks, vendors, and of course themselves.

I shut down when I get faced with immoral actions, its the business that I am in, I cant and wont associate with others that are no on the up and up.

The coverage and sponsorship dollars lost because of what happened at Daytona will be felt for a long time, many people will never return.

What action has Daytona taken so far?-nothing.

Now, lets fast forward to today.

Richard Petty's first race in the Cup series was in Canada.

Canadians are the number 2 fan base in NASCAR.

As a matter of fact, I will tell you a secret that I have never done before and that is the viewership statistics of this website.

United Sates is first, Canada is second, and Mexico?, down in 6th place.

The States takes 80% viewership of this site, Canada is at 15%.

So, lets look at this relationship shall we?

First off, I would hazard a guess that I am the biggest Canadian NASCAR fan.

This through what I have done with this website, and in turn the relationship I have with NASCAR and all its operations attached to it.

As a philanthropist, I have given a lot financially to organizations in and around NASCAR, one needs to look no further than my relationship with MRO, and recently our group raised the most funds for the NASCAR Foundations annual Track Walk at Texas.

This is advertised on our front page.

Not bad for a Canadian huh?

Now, if you want to talk money, I wont tell you the exact funds spent, but on a ticket buying base alone, this comes to over $ 100K annually.

I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

So, lets look at our fan base and see how we are treating them shall we?

Dont forget what The KING said, " Its all about the fans"

This weekend we are racing in Chicago as you know, and think about how close it is in relation to Canada here.....

Chicago wont ship tickets to Canada......

Last year they said "you can pick them up at will call, we dont ship to Canada"

What a way to treat 15% of Nascars Fan base, no wonder I cancelled my account and in fact never even went to the race as I felt like I was being treated like scum.

Going to will call with a 45 foot bus towing a car is no easy thing, and totally unnacceptable.

Lets now look at how NASCAR and everyone else treats Canadians.

Time and time again, I cant even order merchandise on-line from the NASCAR store and all its affiliates. Now lets not even talk about the tracks or second or 3rd level marketing organizations.

The NASCAR members group?, it was not even open to Canadians!

As a marketing person, this is totally embarrasing, NASCAR is speaking out of both sides of its mouth at times it seems.

I wanted to drop off a Flag and some fridge magnets for him to have.

The lineups though in the 100 degree heat where a quarter mile long, so the two of us went shopping instead.

The Mighty Cummins ISX

I took a new rig out for a test drive today, something I have been waiting for years to do and that was to test drive the new Cummins ISX engine.
Wow I dont know where to begin.
For me its all about the engine, tires and transmission, I could care less about the interior stuff.
Heck I dont even remember the colours inside.
The coach was a brand new 2007 model still on the lot a 45 foot Holiday Rambler Navigator 4 slide model.
This coach came with the new Cummins ISX engine. This engine is like a 426 Hemi, man the power!
Its a nice feeling knowing that you are driving a coach with the worlds biggest engine in it.
The amount of power from a standing stop is awesome, and going up a grade did not even make it miss a beat, its like nothing was there.
The Chedoke Expressway I usually labour up at 50 mph today I did 65 and hardly had the pedal down at all.
What really impressed me was the engine braking system, Cummins decided to make their own this time around, no pac or jake brake, they made up an entirely new one, they call it an " Intebrake or Integrated Brake System., operated if I remember right on two overhead cams.
The system has a low and high position. Low shuts down 3 cylinders high shuts down all 6.
This system is so powerful, they should add a middle position and change it to 2 4 and 6 cylinders.
Coming up to a stop light I decided to turn it on where I usually do, and was forced forwards in my seat by the amount of braking torque this engine has.
It was awesome to say the least.
A few miles later I came upon a stop sign where I usually turn left to head to Niagara Falls, its in rural Ontario a sleepy corner in Ontario, a town called Bismark.
No big German battleship here, just a school, a restaurant a few scattered houses, and a crossroads. Some may remember the old go-cart track, we used to stop here as teenagers on the way to Welland to watch the flat track racers.
I turned the brake on where I usually do with my coach, and was slowed almost to a crawl a good thousand feet before the stop sign!!!This coach is awesome I am thinking!!!
When I started to head down our mountain I could hardly wait to try it out and again, I was pleasently surprised, the brake was so powerful I had to turn it off half way down the hill.
So, the bottom line is this, after driving over 200 rigs of all types, driving the new Detroit series 60 515 HP, The cummins ISM, and now the ISX, if you have an option make sure you get the ISX.
The braking confidence this gives you alone is well worth it.

Infield Camping at Talladega

I am watching the race and am very surprised by the amount of empty spots on the infield at Talladega. Granted according to the ticket office they are sold out, but was there a huge amount of tickets on ebay not sold, or did a lot of people get sick and stay at home?

Chime in if you know anything here folks but this is a weird one to figure out.

Holiday Rambler Navigator

I was out at Sicard RV for the open house this weekend and came upon a brand spanking new 2007 Holiday Rambler Navigator 45 foot painted in the Copper Canyon paint scheme, and it is one nice looking rig I can tell you that!

This coach has 4 slides and also has the BIG Cummins ISX in her. This is the biggest engine Cummins has ever put in a coach and she is rated at 525 HP.

The Jellico mountains in Tennessee on I-75 can eat my diesel fumes with this baby, she will use all her power and pull you up with no effort with this massive beast!

I hope in the next day or so to take her out for a spin, so if you are in the market for a Holiday Rambler Navigator, this might be the one for you, I will let you know how she did!

Michael Mcdowell Crash at Texas Motor Speedway

If you have not seen the crash yet, it was one of the hardest I have ever seen, thank god Michael was okay.

The car is obviously safer, that is not what I want to write about, what I want to address is what the media has not or wont talk about.

Has anyone else noticed that they are deliberately not talking much at all about the track cleanup?

Has anyone else also noticed that we seem to be having an abundance of oil lines leaking this year?

Is there anything we can do from a drivers viewpoint to help out?

Here is what I am proposing we study and talk about.

1. I have long believed that we can and should do a better job at cleaning up after a wreck and especially a fluid leak.

2. We need to re-look at how these cars are constructed in relation to the oil system.

3. We need to educate drivers and their spotters on what they can do when they have had a engine failure.

So here is a rundown of the problems and potential solutions.

1. When we have a fluid leak out go the crews and they spread out the speedy dry, let it sit and sometimes get the jet dryers out and blow it off.

This is where we need to change our thinking.

First off, the last thing we should be concerning our self about is how long the delay will be or the race might not get done on time. My answer to that is start the race 1 hour earlier, this will give us plenty of time to clean up after a fluid spill. After all what is more important than saving a human life.

What we need to study closer is how we apply the speedy dry and how we clean it up.

First off the safety crews need to slow down and the track officials need to stop pressuring them to work faster. They need to be given the time they need to properly do their job, period.

Second, we need to look at how the clean up is done. I have long wondered why the speedy dry is not always removed after a spill, this needs to be addressed, and also how the speedy dry is removed. It makes no sense to not remove the speedy dry, we need to take the time and remove it.

When the speedy dry is removed, we need to be assured that it is all off especially in positions on the track where traction is important.

Is the sweeper good enough alone?

Should the jet driers be used all the time?

It really is a question of physics, a powder left on the track will offer less traction on the surface, just think of it as a light dusting of snow or rain, just a slight amount can lessening the traction available.

Speaking of physics, lets also talk about a better way of getting the speedy dry off after it has absorbed the spilt material.

After the sweepers and sweeper/vacuum machines have done their part, and then the jet driers blow any residual away, we need to examine the surface and see if there is still a surface barrier of speedy dry left over.

My guess is that there is.

This is where we need to study possibly washing the track with a good ole street washing machine. This will liquify the remaining powder left over, and then the driers can finish the job off and voila a very clean and track that offers traction.

2 The Oil System

Has anyone else noticed lately the amount of oil lines that are coming off of engines? Can we not secure these things guys? Seems to me there are either some pretty lazy mechanics( suggested by tv announcers) or we need to design some better oil lines and containment system. Maybe we need to go back to a conventional oil system with a deeper sump pump? or, maybe we need to redesign the entire engine package with the oil pump at the rear of the engine, this would save all the damage to the pump and lines when they smack into something.

3. Education

This is the easiest thing we can fix, how many times do you see drivers after they knew they blew up just drive down the middle of the track like nothing happened. The spotters need to check for traffic and get the drivers down to the apron a.s.a.p This will dramatically change everything, the cleanup, the danger and the time the race will be delayed. This needs to be acted on right away.

Congratulations Toyota on your first Nascar Nextel Cup Win

Wow, what a race, and has anyone else noticed how Kyle Busch seems to be playing with other drivers out there?

Toyota enjoy the champagne tonight and take a bow for a job well done.

Joe Gibbs racing can also take a bow, you sure have done a lot with the new team and car and not to mention new manufacturer with Toyota.

As far as Rowdy, why is it he seems to just be able to drive away from people lately?

The truck race the other night was another example, it seemed like everyone else had a couple cylinders out, he was passing people at times like they where standing still.

I picked Busch in my pool today, good choice.

Come over to our website and join in with other fellow Nascar Campers, the fires hot drinks cold and company is great!

More on Tony Stewarts lashing of Goodyear

In a seperate interview I just heard Tony Stewart says he is going home and taking off all his Goodyear tires on his cars and vehicles and installing Firestones instead.

He even suggested that if this is the best that Goodyear can do that they should get out of racing and go back to building car tires only.

He then retracted that idea and said maybe that is not a good idea either.

Several other drivers also piped in and said it was the worst tire ever they have driven on.

Although their where not a lot of accidents today contributed to the tires, there where spin outs, wall rubs and a lot of looooooooooose cars out there.

On this one I commend Tony Stewart for speaking out, as an Rv'er, tires are the biggest complaint motorhome owners have with their rigs, if only we had some good tires on our million dollar rigs we would stop blowing tires, and more lives would be saved.

Is anyone listening out there?

http://www.nascarcamping.com

Tony Stewart Calls Goodyear Tires Pieces of Crap

Never know to mince his words, Tony Stewart lashed out today at Goodyear which he and a lot of other drivers have been doing throughout the week and called the tires that Goodyear brought this week " crap"

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, a Goodyear executive was on the air before the race defending his companies position strangely enough.

Recently I have been very hard on the RV manufacturers because of their wrong choice of tires, so it is also nice to see drivers hard on the tire guys also.

Why?

Simple, the tires are the biggest safety item on our vehicles thats why.

Patrick Carpentier Qualifies at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Congratulations to my fellow Countryman Patrick Carpentier for qualifying in Atlanta on what he calls " Crazy Friday's"

Glad to see he made the big show!!!

Now Patrick just remember, the goal is to finish, Atlanta is just like last week at Vegas, a fast track, and lots of spread out racing, so there is lots of time to pass other cars, take it easy make sure you got lots of room, and remember the tires are not the best so expect some " loooooooose" conditions.

I am going to have some extra Maple Syrup tommorow at breakfast.

More Tire Issues for Motorhomes

It nevers ceases to amaze me at times in how stupid the thinking is at the highest levels in the RV industry.

Tonight I spent a few hours going over what can be done to solve some of the problems that the RV industry itself cant or wont do.

You have to wonder at times how pathetic the industry is operating at when customers themselves have to look at what can be done because of the ignorance of the people that own the companies themselves.

Tonight we tried to solve the weight problems and what can be done about the lack of proper tires on my buds Holiday Rambler Navigator.

If you remember he had a catastrophic tire failure 2 weeks ago.

I have been thinking a lot about this lately, the solution is so bloody obvious, it makes you wonder how incompetent the powers to be are about their own products that they make.

Lets look at tires hall we?

Ask yourself this question.

When is the last time you or anyone you know had a castrophic tire failure in a car?

For myself in 28 years of driving cars and motorcycles, I have never had one, and I estimate between 12 motorcycles, and 20 cars, and what a million miles, I have NEVER had a tire failure.

A few flats yes, but never a tire failure.

But why then in the RV industry do I know so many people that have suffered tire failures?

Easy answer is oh your tires where underinflated, blah, blah blah....

But, the answer that I have to that would be, but so many cars have underinflated tires, why dont they have failures as well?

Well, the answer is simple, the motorhomes are grossly overweight for the tires that manufacturers put on them.

As I write this I just found out that that another friend had a tire blow out on his trailer heading home last week.

The story goes on and on, and the victims and death toll keeps climbing.

Tonight we seem to have come to a conclusion that we can fix what the manufacturers dont want to fix, or at least spend a few thousand dollars trying.

I have researched for a couple years now a new tire that has been made, its a 315 tire, and the long and short of it is that this tire should fit on my buds Navigator.

I will post more as this saga continues.....

Blue Puzzle Pieces Announcers are wearing at the Daytona 500

We have received over 25,000 hits today all wondering about the blue puzzle pieces the announcers are wearing today during the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

This is to raise awareness for Autism Speaks.

At the end of the race Michael Waltrips special edition gold wheels that he raced on his car will be signed by the drivers and then auctioned off to raise money for the foundation.

More details can be found on their website, maybe I will get me one of those wheels:)

Jacques Villeneuve to withdraw from Nascar

Corporate Canada listen up. Are you going to let Jacques return home without a fight?

Outside of the United States Canada is the biggest watcher on TV and participant in Nascar.

Through this website alone Canadians account for 20% of all traffic, and the United States 79%.

That leaves 1% for the rest of the world to fight over.

So, why is it the Canadian Advertisers have not flocked to Villeneuve?

Well, 1st off there has not been a lot of press about him, but bigger to me is Jacques lack of grasping what he needed to do to get the acceptance of sponsors and the fans.

As soon as I heard Jacques was thinking of going to Nascar I knew this was going to turn into a problem.

Why?

I never thought Jacques had the proper attitude or "persona" if you will for the fans and sponsors to grab onto.

Anyone in Politics in a big way know when you need to " handle" your candidate and "shape" him so the public will like him better, and with Villeneuve I never saw that happen.

In the last week my fears where confirmed more, with what I saw and learned.

I hope I am proved wrong, but there is a lesson to be learned here for all aspiring Nascar drivers, this isnt like any other form of motorsports you need to be schooled in " Nascar "
and know how to make it in this motorsport league.

Corporate Canada open those pocketbooks will ya?

As a Canadian it hurts to write this, maybe there is a calling for a new business here for me to explore?

Patrick Carpentier?

You can sleep tonight you got the package.

Canadians Fail to qualify for the 50th running of the Daytona 500

Oh Canada was replaced by Oh No when both Patrick Carpentier and Jacques Villeneuve failed to qualify for the Daytona 500.

The countries hopes where dashed when Villeneuve crashed, and Carpentier was yet another victim of the mysterious right front tire blow out that has been a problem this year at Daytona.

Carpentier drives for Gillette Evernham, hmmmmm wasn't it just a year ago that Casey Kahne blew out 2 or was it 3 right fronts in the same race? Better check those camber settings boys....

Undersized Tires and Overweight Coaches

That sums up what is happening more and more in the RV industry lately.

Today my buddies front drivers tire on his Holiday Rambler Navigator blew to shreds.

His driver was taking his coach down to Daytona for the race.

All tires where up to spec specified air pressure, checked daily, blah, blah blah.

Now, this coach in particular has become an overweight Hippo lately, I remember only 7 years ago this coach had over 10,000 lbs CCC. The same coach today is less than half of that.

I put the blame squarely on Monaco Coach Corporation, they have lied repeatedly on making the product updates they they have promised to this coach and here lies the exact reason why they should have put bigger tires on this beast of an RV.

Firts off, I hate anyone that is a liar and Monaco/Holiday Rambler are liars plain and simple.

Tough words you say?

Not really when you understand that the head guy for product improvement made the promise and failed to deliver on them.

Why oh why do RV manufacturers think that we as Rv'ers are stupid is beyond me. With the power of the Internet today you can no longer hide behind slick salesmen and the lies that the factory tells them to say.

I have always said " people lie, numbers dont.."

When a coach comes in with a very low CCC, what do you do to fix it?

Well the easiest way is to put bigger tires, axles and bags on it, thats how you do it.

What you dont do is blow the tire up to its maximum tire pressure, this gives a tank like ride to the coach.

So, Monaco/Holiday Rambler and others listen up, start to put some bigger tires on your coaches will ya?

Monaco already lost out on 3 potential sales because of this, my buds went elsewhere.

Afterall, how hard is it to put a 315 tire on the coach?

Is the safety of your customers not worth it?

The biggest mistakes the RV industry is making

It had to happen.....

Stupidity would finally get ahold of the RV industry.

But wait you say, its not here already?

The latest goof by the industry is the placement of 250 lbs fridges onto the slide outs. Load it up with a further 200 lbs of food, place it at the front of the slide and there you have a 450 lb bubba on your already overloaded front axle.

Not that this was bad enough, but having an almost 500 lb extra weight on your slide does nothing to make the coach stabler when in station and set up for overnighting.

The side to side swaying action is exagerated 20 times over having this much weight hanging way out there.

Oh, when its cold out, cross those fingers and toes and pray that that super heavy weight slide comes back in.

Wake up engineers, get rid of this stupid idea.

BREAKING NEWS FROM LAKE LLOYD CAMPERS AT DAYTONA

This is a story that if I did not verify I would never believe it to be true.

I verified this with the front office of Daytona itself just now.

I also verified it with the Clubhouse staff also.

The clubhouse for the Lake Lloyd premium members is no more.

This was called the " Board Walk Club ", and apparently is now being called " The Camping World Community Center"

The clubhouse had 2 pool tables, 4 tv's a kitchen, outdoor tables and a bar.

Now, without notice, and still advertised as a community center for its members, the clubhouse has been converted to a retail store for Camping World.

This apparently for a 5 year term.

Never was this mentioned to the campers that have spots here, and people are pulling in as I write this fit to be tied.

Still being charged $ 3,000.00 for a spot, the community center over the years has been extensively used by its members, to host several successful parties, meet and greets, Valentines Day Socials for the ladies, the fighter pilots from 325 Fighter Wing from Tyndale have been our guests there, Fishing derbies held, Pool Tournaments, Games purchased, Internet cables purchased and donated, all by its members.

Ironically you can see posts below of the activities held in the clubhouse throughout the years.

This I can personally say is the ultimate low I have seen and feel at this moment that Nascar and Daytona has done.

People feel betrayed that Daytona advertised and still advertise this as a Community Center for use by its members, and they get here and find out they have been lied to.

Shame.

The Magic of Barrett-Jackson

It was truly touching over the last few days to watch the emotion and amount of money raised at Barrett Jackson through the donations of huge amounts of money raised during the auctions.

Garry Bennett also needs to be congratulated for his " locks for life" donation, of his 15 year growth of his ponytail.

I hope that this is just the beginning for Barrett-Jackson, it would be nice to see the donations keep on climbing.

The Intimidator Series 3

At the Barret Jackson auction tonight the RCR Dale Earnhardt Intimidator was presented, this car with the serial number being "3" is a one off and also came with an extra engine.

One of Dales cars race cars preceded the car being auctioned onto the stage, which was a nice touch. Richard has 43 of Dales Cars in his museum back in North Carolina.

The car auctioned off was a 1969 Chevy Camaro Coupe, with a 427 producing 600 HP, RCR series 3, Block # 140 . The car has the engine that Dale Earnhardt used in the Daytona 500 in 2000. This engine was in the RCR museum, but RCR took it out of retirement and put it into this very special car. The engine was detuned some with a different carburetor and intake manifold to allow it to be run on the street. I am not sure of what the hp is of the engine in the car, I think what Barrett Jackson reported was that of the second engine.

The second engine even had the Intimidator series 3 logo on the valve covers. The engine is a brand new 427 crate engine. Most likely if someone whom wanted to drive this car would drop this engine into the car and save the other one. I could see an electric choke on it, so you know it could be used on the street.

Whomever bought this car no doubt might also want to think about saving the second engine as well, this alone might at some point turn into a very valuable investment for somebody.

This car also will be the only one called " The Intimidator" said Richard Childress

Only 50 cars in total will be built.

The package sold for $ 575,000.00

Several tickets where also thrown in.

1979 Oshkosh Motorhome on Barrett Jackson

Did you notice that Oshkosh Motorhome for sale on Barrett-Jackson!

Man that sure was a beast huh?

I thought more of about how I could use it, it might be great to bust some low lying trees in those campgrounds not maintained by owners huh?

When I saw the winning bidder of the unit, I am sure that I know him, if anyone has any idea who that guy is, he sure looks like a guy I met at the Niagara Falls KOA in Canada a few years back, he was driving a brand new Ferrari red 40 foot rig, it had a Mercedes-Benz 400 diesel in it, I think it was on a freightliner chassis, it sure drew a lot of stares and picture snappers!

I think it went for about 50 grand, it was one of those rigs that you see on the Paris-Dakar rally, and man that seemed like a steal for sure.

It might not have driven the best, but it sure would have been a head turner:)

Barrett-Jackson

Strange Auction going on the last few days.

Just now a Ford Torino Talladega 1 of 748 made went for 40 grand.

Wow what a steal.

The announcers also said the same, I thought this car would have gotten 75k or somewhere around there.

This auction seems to have some really good bargains, and fewer people this year, it will be interesting to see if the numbers are down or not.

The real test for me to gauge this auction is when some Hemi 4 speed matching numbers cars go over the stage, then we will know what is going on.

A Historical Look at Daytona International Speedway

The Daytona 500

The Track:
Daytona Beach International Speedway
Daytona Beach, Florida
Type: Tri-oval
Size: 2.5 miles
Banking in corners: 31 degrees
Built: 1958, 1959
First Cup race: 1959
Seating Capacity: 168,000
Owned by: International Speedway Corporation

In the world of auto racing, there are facilities that need no introduction. Le Mans. Indy. Monaco.
The Daytona International Speedway is a member of this elite group. Since 1959, this Florida venue has provided some of the best racing in the world in a variety of motorsport classes, but Daytona is the icon for NASCAR stock car racing.
The Daytona 500 is the season-opener for the annual Sprint Cup tour and in many fans’ minds is the premier event on the 36-race circuit.
Scheduled for February 17, this year’s Daytona 500 will be the 50th running of what is known as “The Great American Race.” The 200-lap event will also be the first Daytona where NASCAR’s “Car of Tomorrow” will be raced as this new chapter in NASCAR car design is ushered in.
Over the past 50 years, Daytona’s reputation and presence continues to reach new benchmarks. It carries the largest purse of any NASCAR Cup race, it is unique in the world of sports as this race is the start of the season, and the season’s most important, and the race has produced the highest US television ratings of any auto racing event since 1995.

History/Background

There were few paved ovals on the NASCAR Grand National (now the Sprint Cup) circuit after NASCAR organized in 1949 and during its first decade. But while the Daytona races were held on a temporary beach/road course during the 1950s, NASCAR founder Bill France was thinking ahead. In 1954 plans and permits were already underway for a paved, D-shaped “tri-oval” configuration of 2.5 miles in length. Late in 1957 the earthmovers took to the ground, and in order to build up the track surface for the 31 degree banking in the corners, scooped out the ground in the middle of the oval. This man-made area soon filled in with water, and the 29-acre lake became known as Lake Lloyd.
There were some funding issues with the building of the facility late in 1958, but France and his group were able to get the necessary backing, and on February 22, 1959, the first Daytona 500 was held in front of 41,000 fans who witnessed speeds never before obtained in NASCAR racing.
Taking the starting green flag for the inaugural race were 59 cars, all vying for top prize in the “500-Mile International Sweepstakes” which offered a total purse of $67, 760. The famous finish in this first race had Johnny Beauchamp winning the 200-lapper, but Lee Petty believed he had won. Track officials spent the better part of the next three days going over photos of the finish, and it was decided Petty and his Oldsmobile had just inched out Beauchamp, thereby winning the first 500 and just over $19,000.
By contrast, the 2007 Daytona 500 winner, Kevin Harvick, won $1,510, 469.
In the 1960s, famous drivers such as Junior Johnson, Fireball Roberts, and Tiny Lund all took home the Harley Earl Trophy by winning the Daytona 500, but in 1966 Richard Petty won his first 500, and the “King” went on to win five more, the most Daytona 500 victories on record.

Some exciting 500 finishes

Over its 50-year history, the Daytona 500 has produced some of the most exciting finishes in auto racing history, starting with the 1959 race.
Richard Petty had won the 1971, 1973, and 1974 races, and was determined to take his Dodge to victory lane in 1976. But with one lap left, David Pearson passed Petty. Coming out of turn four, Petty ducked low inside and passed Pearson, but the two tangled and ended up on the infield with the finish line in sight. Both cars were severely damaged. Petty could not car his car refired, but Pearson was able to gather himself and his car back together, winning his only 500.
The 1979 Daytona 500 finish could be the most memorable, as it was the first live televised broadcast of the race, and viewers watched in disbelief as last-lap leaders Donnie Allison and Cale Yarbrough tangled and crashed on turn three. A heated word exchange between the two soon led to a physical encounter, and Donnie’s brother Bobby saw what was happening, and got into the exchange while television cameras captured all this off-track action as Richard Petty drove on to his sixth 500 win.
After 20 years of trying, NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt finally won the 1998 Daytona 500 after leading so many of the races to break one of the biggest jinxes in sport. Earnhardt’s win was also the first 500 where the winner received more than $1 million, as he took home $1,059, 105.
The 2007 running of the Daytona 500 must rank as one of the most thrilling finishes in the track’s history, as Kevin Harvick beat out Mark Martin during the race’s green-white-checker last lap by 0.020 seconds. Harvick’s win was the closest margin of victory since the advent of computer scoring in 1993. Harvick’s win also denied veteran Martin his first 500 win in 23 attempts. Harvick’s win was also the first for car owner Richard Childress since the Earnhardt win in 1998, and his starting position of 34th spot was the lowest starting position of any Daytona 500 winner.

The 2008 Great American Race

Simply now known as the Daytona Speedweeks, the track opens its season for the running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona January 26, a 24-hour endurance sports car race, using parts of the Daytona oval along with an infield road course.
Then NASCAR officially opens its 2008 season with the running of the popular Budweiser Shootout February 9 for the Sprint Cup cars, along with the ARCA 200. For the rest of the week, fans will witness Daytona qualifying, the Gatorade Duel, the Chevy Silverado 250 for the Craftsman Truck series, the Camping World 300 for the Nationwide Series, and on February 17 the 50th running of the Daytona 500.

NOTES – The United States Senate recently designated February 17 and the running of the 50th Daytona 500 as “Race Day in America.”…the US Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration squadron will provide the flyover during the national anthem…the winner of this year’s Daytona 500 will receive a special gold-plated Harley Earl trophy, named after the former General Motors design chief…according to conducted studies, the Daytona 500 generates $1 billion in economic impact as NASCAR’s richest and most prestigious event.
